Some viewers walked out of Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale because of its graphic sexual violence and murders, according to an account of two Sydney Film Festival screenings in June 2019. That reaction was reported, not universal. The 2018 historical drama follows an Irish convict pursuing a British officer in 1825 Tasmania, but Kent has said she wanted to tell a story about violence and its effects—not simply make a rape-revenge film.
What is The Nightingale about?
Set in 1825 Tasmania, the film follows Clare, an Irish convict, after violence against her family. She pursues a British officer through the wilderness. The Venice festival page identifies Jennifer Kent as director and lists English, Palawa kani and Gaelic among the film’s languages: La Biennale di Venezia’s film page.

The story takes place in a colonial historical setting. It is a fictional film, not a complete account of Tasmanian history; its narrative should not be mistaken for historical scholarship. Adelaide Film Festival also describes the 1825 setting and identifies Transmission Films as the ANZ distributor: Adelaide Film Festival.
Why did some viewers walk out?
ABC News reported that attendees left two Sydney Film Festival screenings in June 2019 because of graphic rape and murder scenes. The report describes several brutal rape scenes and graphic murders, while noting minimal nudity. It does not give a verified count of people who left or show that the audience as a whole found the film too much to watch. Read the account at ABC News.
#1 Best Overall
For a viewing decision, the key content consideration is explicit sexual violence alongside murder. Viewers who prefer to avoid depictions of rape may want to skip the film; those considering it for its historical and colonial themes should know that the violence is central to its story rather than incidental.
Is it a rape-revenge film?
The revenge pursuit is part of the plot, but Kent resisted reducing the film to the “rape revenge” label. TIME reports that she was interested in the fallout of violence from a feminine perspective and worked with Aboriginal consultant Jim Everett on the historical backdrop: TIME’s interview with Kent.
Rank #2
On the Venice festival page, Kent put her intention plainly: “I wanted to tell a story about violence.” ABC News separately reported Kent’s statement that the film was made in collaboration with Tasmanian Aboriginal elders, who she said considered it an honest and necessary depiction of their history. These are the director’s and collaborators’ stated perspectives, not proof that every artistic or historical choice is uncontested.
What age rating does it have?
Ratings depend on the country and service. The Australian Classification listing confirms a 2018 public-exhibition record for a film directed by Kent, but the cited listing does not establish a rating category: Australian Classification. BFI Player’s rental listing labels the film certified 18, which applies to that service’s viewing context rather than serving as a universal rating: BFI Player.
