Aubrey Plaza and filmmaker Jeff Baena were together from 2011 and married in 2021. They kept much of their personal life out of public view, but the milestones they did share—including Plaza’s account of their backyard wedding—show that their relationship was private, not an eleven-year secret.
When did Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena’s relationship begin?
News coverage dates the start of their relationship to 2011. The couple did not publicly discuss many details of their life together, and the available reporting does not establish a more precise start date or explain how they met. The Guardian’s timeline coverage and Us Weekly’s relationship timeline report the 2011 beginning and their later marriage.
When did Plaza and Baena marry?
They married in 2021. That year, Plaza publicly referred to Baena as her “darling husband” in an Instagram caption. Coverage reported that the wedding coincided with the couple’s tenth anniversary, making the marriage publicly acknowledged rather than something revealed only after eleven years.
Plaza’s account of their wedding
In an appearance on The Ellen Show, Plaza described an impromptu backyard ceremony during the pandemic shelter-in-place period. She said they decided to get married on their anniversary. CBS News reported her account of the wedding.

Why was so little of their relationship public?
Coverage describes Plaza and Baena as private about their personal life. It does not establish that they had a deliberate eleven-year strategy to keep the relationship secret, or explain their reasons for limiting what they shared. The documented picture is a small number of public milestones alongside many personal details they chose not to discuss publicly; that absence is not evidence of conflict or concealment.
How did they work together?
Baena was a writer-director, and Plaza appeared in several of his films. Their projects included Life After Beth, Joshy, The Little Hours and Spin Me Round. Their professional overlap is part of the public record, but it does not by itself reveal what their private relationship was like. The Associated Press covers Baena’s career and their collaborations in its report on his life and work.

The family’s request for privacy
After Baena died in January 2025, Plaza and his family issued a joint statement calling his death “an unimaginable tragedy,” thanking people for their support and asking for privacy. The Associated Press reported on the statement and Baena’s career here.
Plaza’s comments about grief
In an August 2025 interview on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Plaza described grief as a daily struggle. She also said, “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning,” and, “I think I’m OK. But it’s like a daily struggle, obviously.” Those remarks reflect what she shared at that time; they do not invite conclusions about private circumstances she has not discussed. The Associated Press reported on the interview here.
