The fuller plot details come from a published episode recap, rather than Peacock’s short synopsis. The recap says Atwater is with Val when gunshots ring out, pulling their private relationship into the case. The victim is connected to Nick Payton, a former patient of Val’s who had developed feelings for her and was stalking her.
Why does the case put their relationship at risk?
Atwater sees an ongoing safety threat
As the recap describes it, Atwater believes Payton remains dangerous. His concern is not simply that Val once treated Payton: Payton’s reported fixation and stalking make the connection a present safety issue in Atwater’s eyes.

Val has trouble stepping back
Val initially resists Atwater’s assessment and continues trying to help Payton. The recap portrays her as recognizing that she is personally entangled and needs to work through that attachment. The conflict therefore involves both immediate safety and the boundaries between Val’s professional history and her life with Atwater.
Do Atwater and Val break up?
No confirmed breakup is reported. The recap says Val ultimately does not want to end the relationship. That leaves the couple strained by the case and their disagreement about Payton, rather than definitively separated. Peacock’s synopsis does not describe the relationship’s resolution, so the reported outcome should be understood as the recap’s account of the episode.
How does this fit Atwater and Val’s season arc?
In an interview published October 9, 2024—months before “Transference”—LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Atwater, described the relationship as still taking shape after Val’s introduction in Season 12, Episode 3. He said, “I don’t think he knows yet, and I think that’s OK. Too early to tell.”

Hawkins also said Atwater would prefer to let the relationship develop naturally: “I don’t think he’s in a position to force anything, but he would love to be in a position to let go and explore and see what happens, authentically and organically, and if it grows into that, it will be in a healthy way.” Those comments provide earlier context for the couple’s open-ended arc; they are not a reaction to Episode 17. Where can you find the episode?
Peacock and Apple TV both list “Transference,” but their episode details differ: Peacock lists a 42-minute runtime, while Apple TV’s United States listing gives a 40-minute runtime and an April 2, 2025 release date; both list it as TV-14. These are platform-specific listings, not a single universal runtime or confirmation of availability in every region.
