Bohag Bihu—also called Rongali Bihu—is Assam’s spring festival, Assamese New Year celebration and the start of a new agricultural season. Its songs and dances bring people together in public festivities and house-to-house visits. The season’s fresh growth gives the festival its association with nature’s renewal, though that does not mean every Bihu song has the same subject.
What is Bohag Bihu?
Assam marks three major Bihus across the agricultural year: Bohag, Kati and Magh. Bohag, observed in mid-April, welcomes the Assamese New Year and the beginning of the farming season. Assam Tourism describes it as a spring festival, while the state’s Department of Cultural Affairs connects it with farmers beginning to sow and anticipating a good harvest.
Spring and the start of cultivation make renewal a natural way to understand Bohag Bihu. The festival’s setting is one of seasonal transition: a new year begins as a new agricultural cycle gets under way.
Why are Bihu songs sung?
Songs and dances are integral to Bohag Bihu’s communal celebration. One documented practice is huchari: groups go from house to house singing and dancing, offering blessings and receiving gifts, including a gamocha. The custom makes music part of a shared celebration between performers and the households they visit.

Assam Tourism names the dhol, pepa and gogona among the instruments heard during Rongali Bihu. These instruments accompany a festival whose music and dance are experienced as collective celebration, not just as a stage performance.
The official accounts describe the role of songs and dance, but do not provide lyrics or a definitive interpretation of individual songs. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that every Bihu song explicitly celebrates nature’s rebirth—or to assign all songs one universal theme.

How does Bihu celebrate spring?
Bohag Bihu joins the arrival of spring to the Assamese New Year and the start of sowing. Celebration through music, dance and visits gives this seasonal and agricultural transition a communal form. In that context, “rebirth of nature” is a useful interpretation of the season’s renewal, rather than a claim about the meaning of every lyric.
A local example is Phatobihu in Dhakuakhana, in Lakhimpur district. The district account describes a Bohag gathering on the Charikodiya river involving songs and dance. Its history and later changes belong to this particular regional celebration; they should not be treated as a universal account of how every Bihu gathering developed.

How Bohag, Kati and Magh Bihu differ
The three festivals mark different points in the agricultural year, and their character is not interchangeable.

A record-setting performance, not a measure of participation
Assam Tourism reported that 11,304 dancers and drummers, including 2,548 drummers (dhulias), took part in the Government of Assam’s mega Bihu event at Sarusajai Stadium on 13 April 2023. The figures describe that particular record-setting event, not the number of people who generally participate in Bihu.
