In January 2020, four airlines—IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet and GoAir—announced restrictions on comedian Kunal Kamra after he confronted television journalist Arnab Goswami aboard an IndiGo flight. Later reporting said Vistara also temporarily restricted him. These were events reported in 2020; available records do not establish that any restriction remains in force today.
Which airlines initially restricted Kunal Kamra?
On January 28, 2020, Kamra confronted Goswami on IndiGo flight 6E 5317 from Mumbai to Lucknow. Contemporary coverage described the incident as heckling or harassment; those are reported characterizations, not a judicial finding. The Indian Express reported that IndiGo announced a six-month suspension, followed by restrictions from Air India, SpiceJet and GoAir.
| Airline | Initial reported action | What later reporting established |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | Announced a six-month suspension. | The government later told Parliament that the airline’s internal committee imposed a three-month restriction for Level 1 conduct. |
| Air India | Restriction announced “until further notice.” | The cited records do not establish a final duration or current status. |
| SpiceJet | Restriction announced “until further notice.” | The cited records do not establish a final duration or current status. |
| GoAir | Restriction announced “until further notice.” | The cited records do not establish a final duration or current status. |
Did Vistara also ban Kunal Kamra?
Vistara was not among the four airlines that initially announced restrictions. A February 1 report said Vistara and AirAsia India had referred the matter to internal committees without immediately imposing restrictions. Later, Hindustan Times reported that Vistara barred Kamra until April 27, 2020. Thus, the careful count is four initial airline restrictions, plus a later reported temporary Vistara restriction.
How did IndiGo’s six-month announcement change?
IndiGo’s public six-month announcement was not its internal committee’s final outcome. In a 2020 parliamentary answer, the government said IndiGo reported placing Kamra on its no-fly list for three months after its committee found Level 1 unruly behaviour. The parliamentary answer is the strongest cited record for that final airline decision.

What did the DGCA rules say at the time?
Contemporary coverage of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s 2017 Civil Aviation Requirements described an airline as able to impose an interim restriction for up to 30 days while its internal committee considered the case. The committee was reported to have 30 days to issue its final decision. The same coverage summarized maximum restriction periods of up to three months for Level 1 conduct, up to six months for Level 2, and at least two years for Level 3. The Indian Express’s explanation of the framework reported these figures in 2020; they are a summary of the framework as covered then, not a verification of current rules.
What did the Delhi High Court decide?
On February 27, 2020, the Delhi High Court disposed of Kamra’s petition after the DGCA undertook to consider his representation within eight weeks. The order addressed that procedural undertaking; it did not decide the ultimate merits of every airline’s restriction. The order text records the undertaking. The Indian Express also reported Justice Navin Chawla questioning the DGCA’s public endorsement of the airlines’ actions and urging it to withdraw its tweet; that exchange was not a ruling that resolved each airline’s case.

Are the restrictions still in effect?
The cited court and government records concern events in 2020 and do not confirm the present-day status of each airline restriction. “Until further notice” described the initial announcements by Air India, SpiceJet and GoAir; it does not by itself prove an indefinite or continuing ban. Likewise, Vistara’s reported end date was April 27, 2020. The historical record supports a dated account, not a claim that these airlines currently bar Kamra from flying.
