In 2012, a judge temporarily removed Chrisoula Workman’s custody of her daughter, actor Ariel Winter, and Winter lived with her older sister, Shanelle Gray, under a temporary arrangement. Winter was emancipated in 2015. In a 2016 interview, she said she and Gray were not speaking with their mother. Those reports document events at the time; they do not establish Workman’s current lifestyle or whereabouts.
What happened in the 2012 custody dispute?
On October 3, 2012, the Los Angeles Times reported that a judge temporarily removed Workman’s custody after allegations were raised in connection with a guardianship petition. Winter, then 14, was in the care of her older sister, Shanelle Gray. The order and living arrangement were described as temporary, not as a permanent custody ruling.
In November, the Times reported the county Department of Children and Family Services’ assessment: emotional-abuse allegations were substantiated, while physical-abuse allegations were inconclusive. Workman denied the allegations. These are distinct reported categories; the account does not establish that a court found Workman guilty of abuse, and “inconclusive” is not proof either for or against the physical-abuse allegations.
Workman told reporters outside court, “I would love to have my daughter home,” according to the Times’ November 21, 2012 report.

Custody, finances and family arrangements were separate issues
In December 2012, the Times reported that Winter would continue living with Gray while her father temporarily handled her finances. ABC News also reported temporary limits on Workman’s involvement in Winter’s work affairs. These reports describe financial and career arrangements alongside the custody matter; they should not be mistaken for custody itself.
ABC11 reported that the parents had agreed to counseling with Winter and Gray as part of an effort toward longer-term family reunification. That was a reported plan at the time, not evidence that counseling or reunification continued.

What Ariel Winter said later
ABC News reported in March 2016 that Winter had been emancipated from her mother in May 2015. In the same interview, Winter said she and Gray were not speaking with their mother, but declined to explain the reasons publicly. Discussing emancipation, she said, “Nobody controls you anymore.” These statements describe what Winter said in 2016; they do not establish the family’s relationship today. The available reports document the custody dispute and later statements by Winter, but they do not establish Workman’s current residence, employment, activities or lifestyle. Describing her as currently living “a very private life” would therefore go beyond what these reports verify. A lack of recent reporting is not evidence of a particular private life or personal circumstance.
