There is no public confirmation in the sources reviewed that Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise are friends today. In a 2019 interview, McGillis said she generally did not keep in touch with people from film work, but she did not identify Cruise as one of the people she occasionally spoke with. Her warm comments about him in 2013 describe their time working together, not their relationship now.
What Kelly McGillis said about staying in touch
Asked in a 2019 phone interview about the possibility of taking part in promotional events for Top Gun: Maverick, McGillis said she could not predict how she would respond. She then spoke generally about contact with people from film productions: “Movies are odd things. I don’t really keep in touch with anybody,” she said, adding that she thought she had spoken to a couple of people occasionally. She noted that productions bring people together from different parts of the world. Entertainment Tonight published the interview on July 26, 2019.

McGillis did not name Cruise among those occasional contacts. That means her interview does not establish whether the two are friends, still speak, or have had no contact since filming. Vanity Fair’s July 29, 2019 report repeated the general comment from the same interview; it is not a separate confirmation of their private relationship.
What she said about Cruise as a co-star
In a 2013 interview about the original film’s 3D Blu-ray release, McGillis recalled working with Cruise during production. Asked about a favorite moment with him, she remembered repeatedly returning to the tarmac to get a shot in the right light. She called him “such a kind and generous and respectful person” and said he was “just lovely to work with.” Those comments were published by Entertainment Tonight on February 19, 2013.

Her praise is a positive recollection of Cruise as a colleague while they made the movie. It does not say whether they maintained a friendship afterward.

McGillis played Charlie opposite Cruise’s Maverick in the 1986 film. Their characters’ romance was part of the story, not proof of a real-life relationship between the actors. In a 2001 interview with The Guardian, McGillis recalled fans asking where Tom was and her reply: “That was a movie – it was fake.” The Guardian published the profile on March 29, 2001.
