His account of the series’ evolving music connects that current work to a background in Assamese folk and Western classical music—and to projects such as his 2008 Assamese pop album Tup Tup and Project Borgeet.
What Saikia has said about returning to Panchayat
In a September 25, 2026 interview with Variety India, Saikia said he was looking forward to a new season of Panchayat. He described the series’ appeal as its unpredictability: “The most beautiful thing about ‘Panchayat’ is that you never really know where the story is going. It can surprise you, make you laugh and suddenly make you emotional.”
He indicated that the music could evolve while retaining the show’s identity. The interview did not announce a release date for the season. Saikia also confirmed that he would not compose for Mismatched’s upcoming final season.
How the original Panchayat score found its sound
A 2020 interview with Scroll.in documents the making of the original score, not the music for the forthcoming season. The TVF series is set in a village in Uttar Pradesh, but Saikia’s musical references included sounds from the Northeast. Rather than use a conventional rural score, the team explored several styles before settling on an acoustic, pared-back approach.

“So we initially tried symphony, then rock, even jazz. The music for episode one took a month or two to be locked in. Once that was in place, we decided to keep the music acoustic and minimalist.”
The instruments Scroll names include acoustic guitar, pianica, accordion and kora. Saikia said the original score covered 280 minutes of visuals. It did not lean on prominent recurring motifs: each episode presented a different story and challenge, so the music responded to what was happening rather than repeatedly announcing a fixed theme.

A song shaped by sounds from the Northeast
“Hiya Tho” used dummy lyrics built around “Hiya,” which means heart in Assamese. Saikia told Scroll that the song drew inspiration from chants he had heard in monasteries in the Northeast. That detail helps explain how the score could fit a North Indian village setting without treating the setting as a reason to erase the composer’s own musical vocabulary.
Assamese roots, Western classical study and pop
Scroll’s 2020 profile traces Saikia’s early exposure to Assamese folk music and Western classical music. It reports that he studied Western classical music with All India Radio artist Syed Sadullah, later assisted Zubeen Garg in Guwahati, and studied jazz and blues at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music in Chennai. The profile also says Saikia released the Assamese pop album Tup Tup in 2008.

That mix of training is not a simple division between “traditional” and “modern.” Folk music, classical study, jazz and pop are different parts of the background Saikia has described; the Panchayat score shows one way those influences can inform a restrained screen composition. In 2026, he put the connection to Assam in personal terms: “For me, returning to the soil means returning to something instinctive. Assam has shaped the way I listen to music and the way I understand emotion. No matter how far I travel musically, those sounds somehow find their way back into my work.”
Scroll lists Karwaan (2018), Thappad (2020), Gullak and Panchayat among his work. That is a selection from the profile, not a complete credit list.

Project Borgeet brings Assamese devotional music to an orchestra
Scroll describes borgeet as Assamese devotional songs associated with Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhavdeva. In Project Borgeet, Saikia arranged the music for an orchestral setting. For “Are Kompito,” the 2020 profile reports, he worked with an 85-piece Macedonian orchestra and a choir group from Shillong.
Saikia framed the project’s purpose as reaching listeners beyond its existing audience: “My purpose for this project is to bring borgeet to new listeners, so even if one of the 85 musicians in Macedonia hums a borgeet tune 10 years later, I will feel my job has been done.” The orchestra and Shillong choir are part of the account of this track; the interview does not establish a physical edition or current purchase availability.
