Its idea of an “alternate politics of solidarity” is not a claim that marginalized communities automatically act as one: it asks readers to notice how caste and class shape whose struggles receive attention, and to take local histories seriously.
What kind of book is Affairs of Caste: A Young Diary?
Written by Sumeet Samos and published by Panther’s Paw Publication in 2022, the book brings memoir together with sociological reflection. In an interview with TwoCircles, Samos described its method as “narrating your own experiences and what you are observing around you and supplementing that with the broad literature.” He also said he wanted to write down what he had seen and observed before beginning afresh in academia.
That combination matters: the personal account is not presented simply as a private life story, while the analysis is grounded in lived observation. Scroll.in reviewer Soumya Shailendra reads the book as moving beyond an inward memoir to examine the networks and structures of caste shaping Samos’s path as a public intellectual and artist. That is the reviewer’s characterization of its ambition, rather than a formal genre label supplied by the author.
What experiences and settings does the memoir address?
Scroll.in’s review maps several strands in the book, rather than offering a complete chapter-by-chapter guide. It discusses Samos’s childhood in Odisha and local caste relations, regional histories and political conflicts, education and student activism at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the development of his anti-caste political consciousness.

The review also follows the memoir into Dalit Christian experience and urban church settings, as well as institutions that describe themselves as progressive. In his TwoCircles interview, Samos specifically discussed caste in urban churches and a liberal language of shared belonging that may leave caste unspoken. Across these settings, the book’s concern is not only whether an institution speaks in egalitarian terms, but how caste relations persist within its everyday life.
What does “alternate politics of solidarity” mean?
The phrase points toward solidarity that is attentive to unequal power, rather than treating all causes or communities as equally visible. In a 2017 interview with Round Table India, years before the memoir’s 2022 publication, Samos used the term “graded solidarity” for support distributed unevenly along caste and class lines. He argued that upper-caste and upper-class people or causes could attract stronger public attention than Bahujan students confronting threats and exclusion.

That earlier interview helps explain Samos’s political vocabulary; it should not be treated as proof that the memoir uses the exact phrase in the same way. The direct connection to the book comes through Scroll.in’s review, which emphasizes its attention to local Dalit and Adivasi histories and its resistance to reducing political struggle to a simple choice between the state and revolution.
Samos’s account also challenges the assumption that solidarity must arrive only from outside a community. In the 2017 interview, he described an oppressed community’s own struggle as a source of solidarity and strength for other marginalized groups. Read alongside the memoir’s attention to different local and institutional contexts, the point is that alliances need to recognize unequal conditions rather than erase them in the name of unity.

How does the book connect personal testimony and political analysis?
Samos’s stated approach is to place observation alongside broader writing on caste. The memoir’s settings—from Odisha to university and urban institutions—give that method room to examine how social relations operate differently across places. The book is therefore useful to readers interested not only in what happened to the author, but also in how he interprets the structures surrounding those experiences.
His creative work is part of that engagement. In the Round Table India interview, Samos described rap, dance, photography and poetry as an emotional response and critical engagement with degrading, unequal relationships sustained through the dehumanization of Bahujans. This provides context for the artist’s political outlook, though the 2017 statement predates the memoir and is not a description of every element in it.

What have reviewers praised or questioned?
Shailendra’s 2022 Scroll.in review values the book’s sociological attention to caste and its effort to connect personal narrative with wider political structures. The reviewer also observes that the memoir’s multiple timelines and political geographies are not always fully synthesized. That criticism identifies a tension in the book’s ambition: its breadth creates connections across settings, while leaving some threads less tightly joined.
A separate review published by Tychy in July 2023, written from a UK-left perspective, finds the book forceful on caste, class and activism while questioning how fully it develops an alternative political program. This is one reviewer’s situated assessment, not a consensus. Together, the responses suggest a book whose value lies in opening up questions about caste and solidarity, even as readers may differ on how coherently it resolves them.
