Annapurna Devi’s story raises a question at the heart of the documentary 6-A Akash Ganga: “can a musician exist without an audience?” The film follows disciple Nityanand Haldipur as he tries to tell the story of a musician celebrated for her artistry who largely withdrew from public performance. The available accounts illuminate her training, teaching and surviving recordings—but do not settle every mystery around her life.
Which Annapurna Devi documentary is this?
Two titles appear in accounts of filmmaker Nirmal Chander’s work on Annapurna Devi, but the available sources do not establish whether they are separate films, alternate titles or related projects.

Why did Annapurna Devi withdraw from public performance?
The sources agree that Annapurna Devi’s public performance history was brief compared with her long life as a teacher, but they do not establish one definitive reason for her withdrawal. The Indian Music Archive describes her performing sitar and surbahar duets with Ravi Shankar in Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta from 1946 to 1957, then refusing public performance and recording. The Annapurna Devi Foundation likewise portrays her musical life as removed from performance and describes a vow against appearing publicly. These are attributed accounts, not proof of a single motive or a complete chronology.
The contrast gives the film its central tension: how can a musician’s influence be understood when most listeners cannot encounter her in a concert hall? Chander put the distinction this way in Scroll: “Music and performance are two different things – Maa proved it.” That is the director’s interpretation of her life, not a neutral explanation of why she withdrew.

How did her training shape her music?
Annapurna Devi was the daughter and student of Allauddin Khan, the founder of the Maihar musical tradition. The Indian Music Archive says she began with vocal music, turned to sitar after a tonsillectomy affected her singing, and later took up the surbahar, a bass instrument in the sitar family. It connects her repertoire with the Wazirkhani beenkari style. The archive’s account offers a path into her musical development; it should not be mistaken for a full technical analysis of her playing.
Although public appearances were scarce, she taught privately in Mumbai. Her reputation therefore rests substantially on her musical lineage, the testimony and work of disciples, and limited surviving sound—not a large public performance record.

What can listeners hear today?
It is not accurate to say that no audio of Annapurna Devi survives. The Annapurna Devi Foundation presents three recordings it labels Yaman Kalyan (a duet with Ravi Shankar), Manj Khamaj and Kaushiki. The foundation describes them as “stealth-recordings” made around the 1950s and says their sound is muddy. The recordings offer a rare point of contact with her music, but they cannot stand in for the breadth of a live career. That scarcity also helps explain why documentary testimony and disciple accounts matter so much—and why the picture can remain incomplete.

How does Guru Maa approach the gaps in the record?
In Scroll’s 2019 interview, Chander said Guru Maa combined funeral footage, material about Annapurna Devi’s formative years, the Akademi interview, and accounts from disciples. He recalled that there was not much archival material. He also described disciples as holding differing, sometimes contradictory impressions of her temperament and teaching. These are the filmmaker’s recollections and editorial choices, rather than a claim that all documentaries about her share the same structure or evidence.
The disagreements are significant: a teacher can be remembered differently by different students, and a small amount of footage cannot resolve every part of a life. A documentary built from such fragments can make the limits of what is known visible instead of pretending to deliver a definitive answer.

Why do sources give different birth years?
Biographical sources consulted disagree on the year. The Annapurna Devi Foundation gives 1926 and names her parents as Allauddin Khan and Madan Manjari; the Indian Music Archive gives 1927, identifies her birth name as Roshanara Khan, and says Maihar’s Maharaja named her Annapurna. The disagreement should remain visible rather than be resolved by choosing one date without further evidence.
The Indian Music Archive dates her death to October 13, 2018. Together, these accounts sketch a musician whose significance is easier to describe than to capture in a conventional public career timeline.

Where can you watch the documentary?
The NCPA page verifies a past screening of 6-A Akash Ganga on December 1, 2023, but does not establish where the film can be watched now. The sources here also do not clarify the relationship between that title and Guru Maa.
