A 2019 Los Angeles Times account said Cooper received the bulk of his mother’s estate, while her Manhattan co-op went to his half-brother. Cooper has since said he does not plan to leave his son a large “pot of gold,” though he said college would be paid for.
What did Anderson Cooper inherit from Gloria Vanderbilt?
Vanderbilt died in 2019. The Los Angeles Times reported that a source close to the family valued her estate at about $1.5 million and disputed a much larger estimate then circulating. The paper said Cooper received the bulk of the estate under her will, except for a Manhattan co-op left to her eldest son, Leopold “Stan” Stokowski.
That is not evidence that Cooper received exactly $1.5 million in cash. The figure was an estimate of the estate’s value, and the report does not establish a precise payout to him.
Why did Cooper say he would not receive an inheritance?
In a 2014 interview with Howard Stern, Cooper said his mother had told him there was no trust fund for him. ABC News reported his remarks: “My mom’s made clear to me that there’s no trust fund. There’s none of that,” and “I don’t believe in inheriting money.”

Those comments about his expectations growing up are not necessarily at odds with what happened after Vanderbilt died. A trust fund is not the same thing as an inheritance distributed through a will. The later account said her will left Cooper most of her estate.
Cooper also explained his attitude toward a future inheritance in 2014: “I would want them to start working early on and start to have a sense of responsibility. If maybe I felt like they had a good sense of responsibility, maybe I would try to leave some money. I don’t know.”

What has Cooper said about leaving money to his children?
He draws a line between college support and a large inheritance
Speaking on the Morning Meeting podcast in 2021, Cooper said he did not believe in passing on large sums. The Los Angeles Times reported his words: “I don’t believe in passing on huge amounts of money. I don’t know what I’ll have. I’m not that interested in money.”
He said he did not intend to leave his son a “pot of gold,” but expected to pay for college: “I’ll go with what my parents said, which is, college will be paid for and then you gotta get on it.” His stated distinction is between helping with education and providing a large, unrestricted fortune—not between offering no support and leaving money.

His comments are not a final estate plan
In 2023, Cooper told Town & Country that his father had made clear there was no Vanderbilt fortune waiting for him. “In retrospect, I’m really glad he did that,” he said. He connected that expectation to his own drive to work: “That set me out very early on a course of wanting to work and find out what I was passionate about. I want my kids to figure out what drives them, and I want to help them figure that out.”
On how he would talk with his sons about wealth, Cooper said they were too young for that conversation and that he had not yet worked out all the answers. His public remarks express a preference against a large inheritance, but they do not establish the terms of a current will or trust.

What the Vanderbilt family fortune does—and does not—tell us
Cooper has discussed the contrast between his family’s famous history and his own upbringing. In the 2021 interview, he said his great-great-grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt amassed $100 million by 1877 and described that as “one out of every 20 dollars in circulation at that time.” That comparison is Cooper’s characterization in the interview, not a separate measure of what he personally inherited.
The more relevant distinction is between the fortune associated with the Vanderbilt name and the comparatively modest estate estimate reported at Gloria Vanderbilt’s death. Cooper’s stated approach to his sons also reflects his own experience of being told not to expect a trust fund, rather than a documented rule that he will leave them nothing.
