It was Austria’s third Eurovision victory and its first since 2014, according to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
How Austria won Eurovision 2025
JJ represented Austria in the Grand Final, where 26 countries competed. The EBU announced him as the winner on 17 May 2025. The 69th contest was hosted in Basel by Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR, an EBU member.
The victory made Austria a three-time Eurovision winner. Its previous win was in 2014, eleven years before JJ’s result.
Who is JJ?
JJ is the stage name of Johannes Pietsch, an Austrian-Filipino countertenor identified as such by Austrian broadcaster ORF. “Wasted Love” is sung in English. The EBU’s announcement congratulated JJ and ORF on the result.

What is “Wasted Love” about?
JJ has described the song as drawing on his own experience of unreciprocated love: having a great deal of love to give without receiving it in return. On ORF’s song page, he connects that feeling to the image of being adrift at sea in a fragile paper boat. That is JJ’s account of the song’s meaning.
ORF credits Johannes Pietsch (JJ), Teodora Špirić (Teya) and Thomas Turner as the song’s lyricists and composers. Pele Loriano and Thomas Turner are listed as producers. Warner Music describes the track as breakup-inspired pop-opera with techno beats.
