Judith Lucy announced in December 2022 that she was saying goodbye to stand-up, citing unhappiness, anxiety about the work and the strain of touring. She did not say she was giving up performing altogether: she wanted to change how she worked, rather than keep writing jokes and touring constantly.
Why did Judith Lucy announce her retirement from stand-up?
In a first-person essay published by the ABC on 8 December 2022, Lucy said she had been doing stand-up for nearly 35 years. She described the pandemic lockdowns as a prompt to look closely at her life and recognize that she was unhappy. She also wrote about anxiety surrounding the job and the habits she had developed to cope with it. These were Lucy’s own reflections on her experience, not a clinical assessment.
Lucy acknowledged that comedy had also brought her friends, community, travel, adventures, a public profile and income. But she said she was ready to leave stand-up: “I’m done. I’m saying goodbye to something that has defined me more than anything else — stand-up comedy.” Read Lucy’s essay for the ABC.
Is Judith Lucy quitting performing altogether?
No. Lucy made a distinction between leaving stand-up and stopping all performance. In her announcement, she said: “I still plan to write and perform. I don’t want to divorce my audience; I just want to switch things up.”

In a 2023 ABC interview, she clarified what she wanted to leave behind: “I don’t want to stop performing. I just really want to stop writing jokes and touring all the time.” That year, she returned to the stage as Winnie in Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, which ran from 1 May to 10 June 2023. The acting role showed that her announcement was about stand-up and constant touring, not a final exit from live performance. Read the ABC’s 2023 interview.
What has she done since the announcement?
Lucy’s later work has included live appearances outside a regular touring stand-up schedule. A current listing describes her as “Not currently touring” and includes book-in-conversation events; listings can change, so check Lucy’s website for the latest dates and details.
