Australian actor Geraldine Viswanathan plays Mel, an ordinary human assistant to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*. The film was released in 2025, so the casting is no longer a future development: it is a role in the finished movie.
Who does Geraldine Viswanathan play in Thunderbolts*?
Viswanathan plays Mel, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s assistant. Unlike the film’s superpowered antiheroes, Mel is a human character who faces a moral decision, ABC News reported in its May 7, 2025 interview with Viswanathan. Her position near Valentina puts her inside the conflict without making her one of the team’s costumed fighters.

The film brings together Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker after Valentina traps them and sends them on a dangerous mission. Disney describes the mission as forcing the group to confront their pasts. Disney’s film page identifies Jake Schreier as director and Kevin Feige as producer.
How did Viswanathan get the role?
ABC News reported that Schreier pitched the film and Mel to Viswanathan over Zoom. She said she was not able to read the script before signing on. ABC also reported that she took the role after Ayo Edebiri left the project because of scheduling conflicts; that account comes from ABC’s reporting, rather than the official Disney film materials.
#1 Best Overall
- After being ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes assembles and embarks on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will the group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and prevail?
Viswanathan told ABC she was proud to represent Australians in the Marvel universe: “I feel really proud to represent Aussies in the Marvel Universe. Let’s go!”
From Australian comedy to Marvel
Before her Hollywood roles, Viswanathan had early Australian screen and comedy experience, including a bit part in Emo: The Musical, performing stand-up at student bars and joining Sydney comedy troupe Freudian Nip. ABC News reported that she was two weeks into training to present triple j when she received the call for Blockers, the comedy starring John Cena and Leslie Mann.
Rank #2
- Can this disparate group of antiheroes overcome their difficult pasts and form a real team capable of stopping the Void and saving the world?
When was Thunderbolts* released?
The release date depends on territory: Disney lists May 2, 2025, for the U.S.; Disney UK’s press kit gives May 1, 2025, for UK cinemas. Disney’s U.S. page lists a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 2 hours 6 minutes. The UK press kit provides the UK date and film credits.
In a May 2, 2025 Q&A published by The Walt Disney Company, Schreier said, “There’s something that everyone can relate to in all of these characters.” That is the director’s description of the ensemble, rather than an independent critical assessment.
