In an interview published by PerthNow on October 24, 2025, Perth singer and Australian Idol 2004 third-place finisher Courtney Murphy spoke about living with late-stage bowel cancer and continuing to make music with his brothers. The same report announced The Murphy Brothers’ opening slot at the Red Hot Summer Tour’s Sandalford Wines event on December 6, 2025. The band’s official site later confirmed that the performance took place.
What Courtney Murphy said about his cancer
Murphy described his outlook to PerthNow in the October 24, 2025 interview: “I’m not beating this, I’m just going to be as strong as long as I can, and that’s all I’m going to focus on, because there’s two truths happening at once.”
He went on to explain that he was focusing on the time and creative work ahead of him: “One is, I’m going to pass away at some point, but I’ll deal with that when that comes. So right now, the other truth is I’m here, and I’m going to put out as much creative output as I possibly can with these two amazing human beings next to me.”
PerthNow described Murphy as having faced late-stage bowel cancer for 18 months and reported that he was receiving chemotherapy at home in fortnightly cycles. Those are details reported in that interview, not an independent medical assessment. The story also quoted Murphy recounting what his oncologist had told him: “According to my oncologist, I wasn’t supposed to see Christmas, so I’m coming up to my next one, which is even better.” That was his account in October 2025; “next Christmas” referred to Christmas 2025.
