The ticket sent him through to the next stage; it was not a season win.
Who is John Van Beek?
When PerthNow reported on his audition on 2 February 2025, Van Beek was 18 and studying at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). A PerthNow follow-up published on 9 March described him as 19. Those ages refer to the dates of the reports, not his age today.
His background included gymnastics and trampolining. PerthNow reported that an injury ended his Olympic hopes and later described a severe arm injury as ending his trampolining career. The reports connect his move toward singing with that change in direction; they do not establish further medical details.
Van Beek had also sung in choirs, including alongside Guy Sebastian at Telethon the previous year, according to PerthNow.

What did he sing, and how did he earn the ticket?
Van Beek auditioned with Aerosmith’s ballad “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” PerthNow reported that Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark each voted yes, earning him the show’s golden ticket. Shark called the performance “captivating.”
Van Beek told PerthNow that he chose a familiar ballad to show a different side of the song and demonstrate that he could connect with listeners through a ballad. He also related the song to a past relationship. Those were his stated reasons for choosing it.

Why did the judges’ response surprise him?
Van Beek said the pause after he finished singing made him think the audition had gone badly. Recalling the moment to PerthNow, he said: “I finished my audition and there were about 10 seconds of silence at that point I thought oh no I’ve stuffed it. I’ve just made fun of myself on national television.” The 10 seconds were his estimate of the awkward silence, not a timed measurement.
Once the judges responded positively, he said their confidence helped steady him: “I got this reassurance; these big stars — Kyle, Marcia and Amy — have seen something in me, they have faith in me, and they want to help me.”

Later reports tracked further progress: TV Tonight listed Van Beek, then 18 and from Perth, among the 2025 Top 30 on 17 February; PerthNow’s 9 March preview identified him as one of three Perth contestants in the Top 12.
