Australian comedian Dave Hughes was taken to hospital after dislocating his shoulder while surfing at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast on New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2023. Hughes later said he was taking a lesson, fell forwards from a wave and was struck in the back by his surfboard.
What happened to Dave Hughes while surfing?
Hughes described the injury in an Instagram post covered by PerthNow on 1 January 2024: “Shoulder dislocation whilst surfing.” He also said he had endured “two hours of the worst pain of my life.” The report relayed Hughes’s account; it was not an independent medical record. PerthNow’s report said he was taken to hospital after the accident.
How did the accident happen?
In a later account on his radio show, reported by 7NEWS on 15 January 2024, Hughes said he was having a surfing lesson. The instructor had advised him to fall backwards if he came off the board; Hughes said he fell forwards instead. A following wave carried the board into his back, dislocating his shoulder.
“The board got a really good wave and the board smashed into my back and dislocated my shoulder,” Hughes said, as quoted by 7NEWS. He also recalled waiting for help: “I was on the beach for an hour crying,” he said.

When and where did it happen?
The accident happened on 31 December 2023 at Surfers Paradise, on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Hughes’s initial post, covered the following day, thanked his wife, Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club and Gold Coast medical professionals for their help. PerthNow reported those acknowledgements.

No. ABC News reported on 14 October 2025 that Hughes had returned to hospital with fluid in his lungs after an earlier hospital stay following an AFL Legends exhibition match. That separate incident involved broken ribs and a punctured lung; it was not a complication of the 2023 surfing accident. ABC News reported the later hospitalisation.
