Artemis II did not land on the Moon: it carried four astronauts on a crewed lunar flyby in April 2026 and returned them safely to Earth. The Apollo landings are supported by evidence that goes beyond photographs, including lunar material brought back to Earth, contemporaneous mission records and laser-ranging reflectors on the lunar surface. A Hollywood plot about staging a moonwalk is fiction, not a historical record.
Did Artemis II land on the Moon?
No. NASA says Artemis II launched on April 1, 2026, with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew flew around the Moon and returned to Earth. NASA describes it as the first crewed Artemis flight and a precursor to later lunar surface missions, not a landing. NASA’s Artemis II mission page sets out the mission context.
The flyby had scientific value even without a surface landing. In its preliminary report, NASA says the crew documented lunar features and that their observations and photographs could be compared with orbital spacecraft data; photographs were matched to specific lunar locations. That work adds observations, but it is not by itself proof of every claim about Apollo. NASA’s preliminary Artemis II science report describes this work.
What evidence supports the Apollo Moon landings?
The case does not rest on a single photograph or one institution’s retelling. Different kinds of evidence can be checked in different ways: material returned from the Moon, records made during the missions, and measurements using reflectors left on the lunar surface.

Returned lunar material
NASA reports that Apollo astronauts brought back 842 pounds (382 kilograms) of lunar rocks and soil. The cited NASA page does not state a publication year for this total. The samples are physical material available for scientific study, distinct from images or later recollections. NASA’s lunar samples overview gives the figure.
Contemporaneous mission records
The Apollo 11 mission report records the crew’s surface activities, including deployment of a laser reflector. It is a mission-era document rather than a later film or fictional account. Read the Apollo 11 mission report.

Laser ranging from Earth
Apollo reflectors have continued to support lunar laser-ranging science. The experiment uses reflected laser signals to measure the Earth–Moon distance. This is a different evidence strand from the returned samples and the mission report, so the historical account does not depend only on interpreting photographs. NASA JPL explains the continuing lunar laser-ranging experiment.
How should photographic “anomalies” be assessed?
A visual feature that seems surprising is a question to investigate, not proof of staging by itself. Photographs record light under particular exposure, lens, lighting and perspective conditions; the image alone may not explain those conditions. NASA’s educational resource, “Did We Really Land on the Moon?”, addresses the staged-landing claim and discusses photographic and lunar-soil evidence.

Specific claims should be treated separately. Explanations about missing stars, shadows that appear to point in different directions, or a flag seeming to move require evidence about the relevant camera settings, perspective or flag construction. The cited NASA resource is a starting point for evaluating the claims; it does not establish a complete explanation for every version of every photographic argument. The broader point is that a disputed image is not the only available evidence: samples, mission documentation and reflector measurements are independent types of evidence that can be cross-checked.
What does Hollywood have to do with the Moon-landing conspiracy story?
The 2024 comedy Fly Me to the Moon uses a fictional contingency plot in which a staged backup moonwalk is prepared in case the real mission fails. That premise can make the idea of a staged landing familiar, but it is a story device, not evidence that Apollo was staged. TIME’s account of the film quotes historian Roger Launius: “There’s no evidence whatsoever that NASA ever faked a moonwalk.” TIME discusses the film and the historical claim.

The useful distinction is between fiction and records. A movie can explore a “what if” scenario; it cannot establish what occurred during Apollo. For that, the relevant evidence is the mission documentation and physical and scientific evidence, not the film’s plot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to weigh the claims fairly
| Question | Hoax claim | Evidence-based account |
|---|---|---|
| What is being assessed? | An interpretation of selected photographs or a claim that the landing was staged. | Returned lunar material, mission records and laser-ranging reflectors, alongside photographs. |
| Can it be checked in more than one way? | A visual interpretation can depend on how an image is read. | Samples, documents and reflector measurements are distinct evidence types that can be examined through different methods. |
| Which mission is at issue? | The conspiracy claim concerns the Apollo surface landings. | Artemis II was a later crewed flyby with a different objective; it did not land. |
| What does a staged-landing movie show? | A fictional staging scenario. | It is not a mission record or independent evidence about Apollo. |
These claims should not be presented as equally supported: the evidence cited for Apollo includes physical material, contemporaneous records and continuing measurements, while the film is fiction and photographic claims need to be evaluated against the conditions under which the images were made.
