In August 2015, as Jon Stewart prepared to leave The Daily Show, Arby’s turned years of his jokes about the chain into a farewell campaign. Its main commercial stitched together Stewart’s insults, played “Thank You for Being a Friend,” and ended with a wry message: “Not Sure Why, But We’ll Miss You.”
Why Arby’s said goodbye to Jon Stewart
Stewart had repeatedly mocked Arby’s and its food on The Daily Show. Rather than answer the jokes with a defense of the menu, the chain used them as the material for a send-off timed to his final week as host in August 2015. Contemporary reports said Arby’s bought advertising around Stewart’s penultimate episode. Inside Edition and CBS Los Angeles covered the campaign at the time.
What was in the tribute commercial?
The longer spot assembled clips of Stewart taking aim at Arby’s and set the montage to “Thank You for Being a Friend.” Its closing line—“Not Sure Why, But We’ll Miss You”—made the joke explicit: the chain was treating its persistent critic as a friend on his way out. iSpot.tv lists the spot, “To Jon Stewart: Thank You for Being a Friend,” with an August 6, 2015 publication date: campaign listing.
The sandwich in the companion ad
A shorter companion commercial showed a double-corned-beef sandwich with deli mustard on marble rye. Its narration presented the sandwich as something for Jon—and for viewers—to share while feeling sad about his departure. That description tells us what appeared in the advertisement; the available reporting does not establish that the sandwich became a regular menu item or that Arby’s offers it today. Inside Edition described the spot and its sandwich.

How Arby’s framed the joke
The campaign’s self-deprecation was deliberate. A Star Tribune report quoted Fallon executive Rob Heath: “We weren’t going to beat one of the funniest guys in the world. We wanted to show that Arby’s was taking its licks and was still there to be a friend.”
The same report attributed this explanation to Arby’s: “Our banter with Jon over the last couple of years just goes to show that if you can keep your sense of humor while staying true to your brand, you can turn what could have been a negative experience in our favor.” Fast Company also covered the campaign strategy and its timing around Stewart’s departure: Fast Company.

What the campaign does—and does not—tell us
The farewell spots made Stewart’s recurring criticism part of Arby’s advertising, recasting a running gag as a friendly goodbye. They document a 2015 campaign, not a current menu promotion. The sandwich’s appearance in the companion ad is not evidence of its ongoing availability, and the contemporaneous coverage cited here does not report a sales lift or other measured campaign result.
