Director James Wan’s comments do not identify a specific ancient sea god or historical religious tradition as a direct source.
What mythology inspired Aquaman?
The film’s central mythology is the fictional lore of Aquaman and Atlantis developed in DC comics. DC describes Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa, as half-human and half-Atlantean, and credits James Wan as director. DC’s official film page identifies the movie as a 2018 action-adventure film.
Wan summarized his approach in a 2018 DC interview: “I’m using the mythology of Aquaman and his world to pull it all together.” That points to the character’s comic-book world as the framework for the film—not to a retelling of a named ancient sea-god myth. Wan’s interview with DC discusses his comic influences and the film’s broader creative mix.
Is the film based on ancient sea gods?
The sources available do not establish that Aquaman directly adapts any specific ancient sea god, religion, or myth. Its underwater kingdom and supernatural elements may feel familiar to viewers who know sea mythology, but resemblance alone is not evidence of a direct adaptation. The supported distinction is between the film’s fictional Atlantean source mythology and the ocean-inspired look of its world.

How Aquaman comics shaped the film
Wan discussed drawing on multiple periods of Aquaman comics, including Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis’s work, earlier stories, and Silver Age material. He said he wanted to embrace the character’s retro qualities while making room for its colorful characters. DC characterized Aquaman’s comic history as 77 years in its 2018 article; that figure describes the history as presented then, not a current anniversary calculation.
The director also cited influences beyond comics, including classic Ray Harryhausen films, earlier Spielberg movies, and Romancing the Stone. He described Aquaman’s own mythology and world as the element that brought these different influences together. These are Wan’s stated creative references, not evidence that the film adapts any one of them wholesale.

How ocean life informed Atlantis’s design
Wan described a visual-development process informed by underwater plants, marine life, and the ocean’s contrasting sense of wonder and danger. In a July 2018 Fandango interview, he said the production had done extensive research on underwater plants and marine life and had drawn inspiration from the ocean and sea life. He also discussed imagining Atlantis through organic forms such as coral and giant jellyfish. Fandango’s interview with Wan presents these as design influences for the film’s undersea world, not as historical claims about Atlantis.
