Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is No. 1 on Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. The ranking was an editorial selection, not a chart based on Apple Music plays; the countdown ran from May 13 to May 22, 2024.
Apple Music’s top 10 albums
Apple Music revealed its final ten albums on May 22, 2024, concluding the countdown. Here is the ranking and each album’s original release year, as listed by Apple Music:
- Lauryn Hill — The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998)
- Michael Jackson — Thriller (1982)
- The Beatles — Abbey Road (1969)
- Prince and the Revolution — Purple Rain (1984)
- Frank Ocean — Blonde (2016)
- Stevie Wonder — Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
- Kendrick Lamar — good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012)
- Amy Winehouse — Back to Black (2006)
- Nirvana — Nevermind (1991)
- Beyoncé — Lemonade (2016)
Apple announced the project on May 13, 2024, and unveiled the albums in a ten-day countdown. The finale featured a roundtable with Nile Rodgers and Maggie Rogers, hosted by Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden.
How Apple Music chose the albums
Apple described the ranking as a modern editorial project assembled by its experts with a select group of artists, songwriters, producers, and music-industry professionals. Apple said the list was “fully independent of any streaming numbers on Apple Music.” It should therefore be read as an editorial ranking, not a measurement of which albums were most played.

The Associated Press reported further details about the voting process: Apple’s editorial team developed candidates spanning roughly 65 years of recorded music, and participants submitted ranked ballots through a voting microsite. AP reported that placements were weighted, so higher-ranked albums received more votes. Apple’s announcement did not publish a complete scoring formula, so the exact weighting and its effect on the final order are not specified there.
As AP reported, Ebro Darden, Apple Music’s global editorial head of hip-hop and R&B, said, “This list isn’t a popularity contest.” He also said voters were challenged “to not vote based on your favorites.” These remarks describe the intended approach; they do not turn the ranking into an objective or universally agreed measure of musical quality.

Why Lauryn Hill’s album was No. 1
Apple ranked Hill’s 1998 debut solo album first, ahead of nine records spanning several decades and genres. The list presents Apple Music’s judgment about albums that shaped music and listeners’ lives, rather than a claim that one record can be proven the best by a single measurable standard.
On receiving the recognition, Hill told Apple Music: “This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
