2025’s horror, science-fiction, and fantasy slate ranged from original high-concept stories to franchise returns, literary adaptations, and large-scale spectacle. This is a retrospective on the films that generated anticipation in a preview-era roundup—not a complete calendar or a guarantee that every title arrived on its originally announced date. The original Gizmodo/io9 selection called itself non-comprehensive and warned that release dates could change.
What made the 2025 genre slate stand out?
It was less a single trend than a mix of different kinds of appeal. Original premises such as Companion, Mickey 17, and The Gorge sat alongside horror sequels and franchise continuations, including 28 Years Later, M3GAN 2.0, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Black Phone 2. Fantasy and adaptation appeared in The Legend of Ochi, In the Lost Lands, and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, while superhero and established-universe films brought a larger spectacle dimension.

Which science-fiction films offered original premises?
Companion
The sci-fi thriller featured Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher. Its high-concept setup made it one of the original-premise entries in the roundup, rather than another chapter in a long-running screen franchise.
#1 Best Overall
Mickey 17
Bong Joon-ho’s science-fiction story follows a worker whose clones encounter one another. That identity-and-cloning premise gave the film a distinct speculative hook within a slate that also included many sequels and established properties.
The Gorge
Scott Derrickson’s sci-fi horror film paired Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy. The preview-era roundup listed it for Apple TV+, illustrating that a genre slate could include streaming releases as well as theatrical films. The cited material does not establish current availability by territory.
Which horror films continued familiar stories?
28 Years Later
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland returned to the fast-zombie world they created. The film was framed as a major continuation of an established horror series, rather than a standalone take on the subgenre.

M3GAN 2.0, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and Black Phone 2
These sequels represented several different corners of franchise horror: a return to the world of a killer doll, another entry in the supernatural Conjuring films, and a follow-up to The Black Phone. Their presence underscored how much of the year’s horror anticipation was tied to recognizable properties.

The Monkey
Osgood Perkins adapted a Stephen King short story for this horror entry. Its source-text connection made it an adaptation alongside the year’s original concepts and franchise continuations.
Where did fantasy and adaptation fit?
The Legend of Ochi
A young girl befriends a forest creature that others fear. The premise offered a fantasy counterpoint to the slate’s many sequels and superhero films, centering a creature relationship rather than an established cinematic universe.
Rank #3
In the Lost Lands
This fantasy adaptation was another part of the year’s varied slate. The preview-era material identifies the title but does not provide a verified release outcome or enough detail to make a more specific claim about its eventual distribution.
Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel crossed fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Netflix categorizes the film as horror and sci-fi. The Associated Press’s fall 2025 calendar distinguished its planned theatrical date, October 17, from its Netflix streaming date, November 7. Those are separate viewing milestones, not interchangeable dates.
Which films brought superhero or franchise-scale spectacle?
Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Both were framed as major summer superhero releases. They fit the fantasy and science-fiction side of the roundup’s broad genre brief, rather than its horror line-up.
Predator: Badlands
Dan Trachtenberg directed this new entry in the Predator franchise, with Elle Fanning. Disney’s CinemaCon account described an outcast young Predator and an unlikely ally; the Associated Press later described a Predator-and-android pairing. Those descriptions point to a different angle on the franchise without establishing a broader claim about the film’s reception.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
James Cameron’s return to Pandora was the slate’s large-scale science-fiction and fantasy event. 20th Century Studios lists a December 19, 2025 release date, classifies the film as action-adventure, fantasy, and science fiction, and gives a runtime of 3 hours 15 minutes.
How should the 2025 dates be read?
The original roundup was a preview, and its schedule was explicitly provisional and incomplete. Its announced timing is useful for understanding what audiences were being invited to anticipate at the time, but it should not be treated as a verified release history for every title. The later AP calendar and official studio pages supply specific context for Frankenstein and Avatar: Fire and Ash; they do not verify every film in the roundup.

Distribution also matters when comparing dates. A theatrical opening and a later streaming debut are different events, as the Frankenstein windows show. The preview listed both The Gorge on Apple TV+ and The Electric State on Netflix, but current watch options can vary by region and should be checked with the service or distributor.
