That is a personal order, not a claim that critics or audiences agree. The trilogy’s scores on Rotten Tomatoes tell a different story from my list—and the gap is part of what makes the films interesting to rank.
How I’m ranking the Fifty Shades trilogy
“Hate” here means how frustrating I find each film as a piece of storytelling, not whether it has no appeal or whether anyone is wrong to enjoy it. I’m weighing momentum, the central relationship, performances and direction, and whether the film makes its place in a three-part story feel worthwhile. My list runs from least hated to most hated.
The films arrived in release order: Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Fifty Shades Darker (2017), and Fifty Shades Freed (2018). Universal describes Freed as the “climactic chapter” and says it concludes events set in motion in the first two films. Universal’s film page also calls the franchise a “worldwide bestselling” phenomenon; that is the studio’s promotional wording, not an independently verified sales figure.
3. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015): the one I dislike least
The first film lands at the bottom of my hate ranking because the basic setup is easier to follow than the trilogy’s later turns. Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey meet, attraction develops, and the story’s central tension is the difference between what they want from a relationship. That gives the film a recognizable dramatic question, even when the answer it offers does not satisfy me.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its relative advantage is also its limitation: it spends time establishing the pair and the terms of their dynamic, rather than trying to function as a finale. The result feels more contained than the sequels. I still find the relationship’s push and pull less compelling than the film seems to believe it is, but the first installment at least has the clarity of an introduction. It is the easiest of the three for me to sit through, not a film I would call successful overall.
2. Fifty Shades Freed (2018): a finale with too much to wrap up
Freed takes second place in my ranking: I dislike it more than the first film, but less than Darker. Its advantage is that it knows it is bringing the trilogy to a close. There is forward motion in watching the relationship move into its next stage and seeing the story tie off threads left by the earlier films.

That same end-of-trilogy job weighs it down. The relationship has to carry the film while the plot adds new complications, and the shifts in emphasis make the emotional through-line feel less steady to me. The concluding installment’s job is not simply to end; it has to make the journey feel earned. Freed reaches an endpoint, but the buildup does not make that endpoint feel like a satisfying payoff.
1. Fifty Shades Darker (2017): the one I hate most
Fifty Shades Darker is my most disliked entry because it feels like the least persuasive middle chapter. It has to deepen the central relationship and set up what follows, but I find its story less focused than the first film’s introduction and less purposeful than the final film’s wrap-up. Its dramatic turns do not build into a strong enough sense of consequence for me.

The result is a sequel that often feels caught between repeating the appeal of the original and promising a more substantial story. I wanted the relationship’s development to give the film a clearer emotional direction; instead, the middle installment leaves me with the weakest sense of why this chapter needed to be a separate film. That is why it takes the top spot in a ranking where “top” means most hated.
How my ranking compares with Rotten Tomatoes
My order is not the same as Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed scores. The site separates its Tomatometer, based on critics’ reviews, from its Popcornmeter, based on audience ratings. These are platform aggregates, not definitive measures of quality, and they can change as new data is added. The figures below were displayed on October 7, 2026.

| Film | My rank (least to most disliked) | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) | 3 | 25% (279 reviews) | 41% (50,000+ ratings) |
| Fifty Shades Freed (2018) | 2 | 11% (192 reviews) | 38% (5,000+ ratings) |
| Fifty Shades Darker (2017) | 1 | 11% (207 reviews) | 47% (25,000+ ratings) |
Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed scores for Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed show a useful contrast: critics’ scores tie the sequels at 11%, while audience scores rank Darker highest of the three. That does not invalidate a personal ranking; it shows how much the answer depends on what a viewer values.
