When and where did Rust premiere?
The film’s world premiere took place on November 20, 2024, at Camerimage in Toruń, Poland. It was a festival screening, not a general theatrical release. The festival, which focuses on cinematography, announced the film in October. It said Hutchins had hoped to bring Rust to Camerimage, where festival director Marek Żydowicz said she felt at home among cinematographers. Los Angeles Times

What happened to Halyna Hutchins on the Rust set?
In October 2021, during filming near Santa Fe, New Mexico, Hutchins was killed and Souza was wounded in an on-set shooting. Hutchins was 42. The tragedy became inseparable from the film’s eventual premiere and completion. Souza told NPR that the human cost of the incident “overshadows everything, rightfully so, and is so much more important than any movie.” NPR, republished by KPBS

How was the film completed after the shooting?
Hutchins had filmed more than half of Rust. Cinematographer Bianca Cline completed the production, studying Hutchins’s notes as she worked to preserve her visual approach. Matthew Hutchins, Halyna’s husband, became an executive producer after production resumed. NPR, republished by KPBS
Souza said he initially could not imagine continuing after the shooting. He later agreed to finish the film after learning Matthew Hutchins wanted Halyna’s final work to be seen. Souza also acknowledged that the story’s plot—about an accidental killing—could be unsettling in light of the real death on set. NPR, republished by KPBS ABC News Australia

Why was the decision to finish Rust disputed?
The people connected to Hutchins did not all take the same position. Souza described completing the film as a way to preserve her work, and reporting said Matthew Hutchins wanted her final work to be seen. Hutchins’s mother, Olga Solovey, declined to attend the premiere and objected to the film’s promotion. Production representative Melina Spadone said the decision to finish the film had the support of Hutchins’s family and disputed the suggestion that producers stood to profit. These are attributed positions, not evidence of a unanimous family view or a settled account of the film’s finances. NPR, republished by KPBS
Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas, told NPR that Baldwin completed the film for Hutchins’s family and legacy, was not paid to do so, and had no financial interest in proceeds. That is the attorney’s statement, not independent verification of financial arrangements. NPR, republished by KPBS

When the film premiered in November 2024, a New Mexico judge had dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against Baldwin during trial after a dispute over the handling of evidence. Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months. These details describe the legal status at the time of the premiere; they do not establish the later status of civil litigation or every subsequent legal development. NPR, republished by KPBS
