Alan Cumming’s appeal on The Traitors is less about a measured surge in his personal fandom than the way he turns hosting into a performance: sinister, arch, camp and extravagantly dressed. The evidence shows a hit show with a shared audience ritual, visible online discussion and major awards—not a published count of Cumming’s individual fans. In the U.S., all seasons stream exclusively on Peacock.
Why is Alan Cumming so entertaining on The Traitors?
The Traitors is a social-deduction game: Faithful contestants try to uncover the Traitors, while the Traitors conceal their identities. The game draws on the familiar Mafia and Werewolf premise, but in the U.S. edition Cumming does more than explain rules or announce what happens. His host supplies the atmosphere, framing the missions, murders and banishments as a theatrical game of danger and deceit.
Cumming told the Television Academy that he imagined the character as “like a James Bond villain.” The Academy describes the result as a heightened Highlander persona: slightly sinister, arch and sometimes punk, delivered in Cumming’s native Scottish brogue. That deliberate contrast—an elaborate, amused host presiding over contestants’ anxious maneuvering—gives the show a distinctive comic edge. The Television Academy’s feature on the series also describes the game’s relationship to Mafia and Werewolf.
That characterization helps explain why Cumming feels central to the show’s identity rather than interchangeable with a conventional reality-show presenter. He makes the setting itself part of the entertainment: his delivery can sound ominous, then turn knowingly playful, as the game shifts between suspense and absurdity.

How do his costumes contribute to the show?
The clothes are part of the same performance, not simply a collection of eye-catching outfits. The Television Academy notes Cumming’s use of kilts and plaid, alongside pieces from his own closet and looks selected with stylist Sam Spector. In a 2026 interview, Spector said the custom Season 4 looks were developed around the show’s missions and roundtables. The result makes fashion another way the host participates in the show’s story world: the visual tone shifts with the events unfolding around him. What evidence is there of audience enthusiasm?
There are clear signs that viewers experience the show as a communal event. In a 2024 interview, Cumming said weekly releases created a “watercooler moment”: audiences could follow the reveals together rather than learn the outcome all at once. He described that shared rhythm to TheWrap.
Peacock’s January 2026 coverage also pointed to audience conversation around a possible Rob-and-Maura pairing, including a TikTok tag and Reddit threads. Those are examples of discussion around the series and its contestants; they do not show how many viewers became Cumming fans. Peacock’s piece on the pairing provides that example.

The strongest available audience figures are for the program, not its host. NBCUniversal reported that The Traitors accumulated 8.1 billion minutes viewed during the 2026-to-date period from December 29, 2025, through September 6, 2026, citing Peacock first-party data and Nielsen. The same announcement reported a 72% increase over the prior season for that period. Neither number measures Cumming’s personal fandom. In the 2026 Emmy cycle, The Traitors won seven awards: six at the Creative Arts Emmys and one on the primetime telecast. Cumming won Outstanding Host for a third consecutive year. After the win, he praised the show’s shared audience experience, saying it was “so diverse” and that people coming together to watch a show about “treachery and betrayal” was beautiful. The remarks underscore the communal appeal he has described, while the awards recognize the series and his hosting rather than count fans. Will Alan Cumming host more seasons, and where can you watch?
As of NBCUniversal’s September 16, 2026 announcement, Peacock had ordered three additional seasons beyond the season set to return in 2027, with Cumming returning as host.
