His career joined decades of popular cinema with a consequential entry into Tamil Nadu politics.
Who was Vijayakanth?
Born on 25 August 1952, Vijayakanth—styled “Captain Vijayakant” in the Government of India’s Padma Bhushan citation—became a leading figure in Tamil cinema before founding DMDK, a state-recognized political party based in Tamil Nadu. The Press Information Bureau’s condolence release identified him as the party’s founder and carried Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tribute: “As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.” That is Modi’s assessment in a condolence statement, rather than a neutral measure of political impact. How did Vijayakanth die?
Vijayakanth died at a Chennai hospital on the morning of 28 December 2023. India Today reported that the hospital said he had been admitted for pneumonia, was on ventilatory support, and died despite medical staff’s efforts. Separately, the report said DMDK had announced that he tested positive for COVID-19. These are distinct attributed accounts; the report does not establish a more specific underlying cause of death. What movies was Vijayakanth known for?
Vijayakanth made his Tamil film debut in 1979. The Government of India’s posthumous Padma Bhushan citation records 154 films through 2015 and identifies Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981) as his first significant break. The film was later remade in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. The citation characterizes his screen roles as promoting patriotic and nationalistic values; that is the award citation’s description, not an independently measured account of audience response. Captain Prabhakaran is another notable title linked to his “Captain” identity in the official citation. It is a useful starting point for viewers exploring his film career, without implying that it is definitively his best work.

DMDK’s early electoral showing demonstrated that Vijayakanth’s public profile translated into a measurable political presence. In the 2006 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the party contested 232 constituencies and received 8.4% of the vote, according to The Indian Express. Vijayakanth won the Virudhachalam seat, making him the party’s sole successful candidate in that election. Those figures capture an early milestone, not a comparison with the party’s performance in later elections. The Indian Express’s account.
