Angry Young Men is a three-part Prime Video docuseries about Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, the writing partnership behind some of Hindi cinema’s defining films. It is an affectionate, accessible account built around personal recollections and familiar screen moments—but it offers less detail about how the two writers actually worked together, and it does not resolve why they parted ways. Hindi-film fans will find plenty to revisit; newcomers can use it as a welcoming introduction.
What is Angry Young Men about?
Directed by Namrata Rao, the series revisits the rise and legacy of Salim-Javed, the partnership that helped make the Hindi-film writer a star in his own right. Amazon announced it as a three-part series produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Media & Entertainment, and Tiger Baby, and described it as Rao’s directorial debut. Amazon’s India announcement described Salim-Javed as having transformed Hindi cinema’s attitude toward writers; that is the platform’s framing, while the critical assessments below come from independent reviews.
Prime Video says the pair co-wrote 24 films in 11 years, 20 of which were blockbusters. That is the platform’s stated figure, not an independently audited count. The episodes move from the partnership’s origins and rise to the creation and cultural impact of Vijay, the Angry Young Man figure, and then to the relationship’s faltering and aftermath. The catalog displays 19 August 2024 as the episode date, while Amazon’s India launch announcement gives 20 August 2024 as the announced premiere date. Amazon said the series was set to stream exclusively on Prime Video in India and more than 240 countries and territories at launch; current availability can vary by location, so check the service’s local listing.

Is Angry Young Men worth watching?
Yes, if you want to spend time with the people and memories around Salim-Javed’s films. The docuseries’ appeal is its access to recollections from the writers, their families, and people in the film world, alongside moments from the movies that made their work part of popular culture. India Today’s Vineeta Kumar called it a fitting tribute and praised its candid, emotionally rendered memories, including flaws and disagreements rather than an entirely flawless portrait. India Today’s review describes it as a visual biography.
That warmth is also the series’ limit. Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review finds nostalgia, interesting trivia, some unseen stills, and moving accounts of the writers’ early struggles, but asks how much the series explains their writing process. It is more commemorative portrait than close examination of a creative method: viewers hear stories about the partnership, but should not expect a detailed account of how scripts were developed, divided, or revised.

Scroll’s review headline calls the series “warm anecdotes and some insights.” That phrase captures its balance: the stories and personal perspective are the attraction, while the insights into craft are comparatively limited. Scroll’s review headline is a useful shorthand, not a quote from the series.
Who is it best for?
- Newcomers to Salim-Javed: The film clips, anecdotes, and broad career arc provide an accessible way into their importance.
- Longtime fans: Familiar scenes and stories may land chiefly as a nostalgic return rather than a major revelation.
- Viewers interested in screenwriting: The series offers context and recollection, but not the granular craft analysis that a writing-process documentary would require.
Why did Salim and Javed split up?
The series addresses the partnership’s decline and aftermath, but it does not give a definitive answer to the underlying reason for the split. The Prime Video episode description establishes that the final installment covers the faltering partnership; it does not establish that the documentary settles why it ended. Gupta’s Indian Express review likewise says the long-running question remains unanswered. Viewers should approach the last episode as an account of the separation’s context, not a conclusive explanation.

What does the series reveal about Salim-Javed’s legacy?
It foregrounds how the partnership’s work helped establish the Hindi-film writer as a visible creative force and made the Angry Young Man a defining screen figure. The series returns to recognizable films and dialogue as shared cultural touchstones, while personal memories place the celebrated work alongside early struggle, disagreements, and the relationship’s eventual end. Its strongest case for the partnership’s significance comes through the people who remember it and the films audiences still recognize, rather than an extended analysis of authorship or influence.
Official launch comments should be read in that promotional context. Zoya Akhtar described the pair as “the two men that created a character that pretty much defined Hindi cinema in the 70s,” while Farhan Akhtar said their journey showed “grit, passion, and a fierce zeal to transform Hindi cinema, especially in its attitude towards the writer.” These comments appear in Amazon’s announcement; they express the filmmakers’ perspective, not independent critical findings.
