Angelina Jolie has already returned to screen acting: she starred as Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria, released in select U.S. theaters in 2024 and later on Netflix. What remains uncertain is whether she will take on roles regularly again. Jolie has said she has no clear map for what comes next, but by June 2026 she was describing a renewed interest in roles with more joy, boldness, and energy.
Why did Angelina Jolie act less often?
Jolie has described the slowdown as a combination of family responsibilities, limited availability, and feeling drained—not as a retirement announcement. In an August 2024 Vanity Fair interview, she said, “I needed to be home more with my kids.” She added that as her children grew older and more independent, she felt “less needed and so able to go away for different periods of time.” Read the interview in Vanity Fair.
In a November 2024 Associated Press interview, Jolie said, “I worked very little the last eight years,” explaining that her choices during that period were often work that was “smart financially and short.” She also said, “I was kind of drained. I couldn’t for a while.” The AP noted that her recent years included directing as well as prioritizing the raising of her six children. These are Jolie’s own retrospective comments; they do not establish one single explanation for every career decision. Read the AP interview.
Has she already returned to the big screen?
Yes. Jolie played opera singer Maria Callas in Larraín’s Maria, a film that portrays Callas during her final days. Netflix lists a select U.S. theatrical release on November 27, 2024, followed by its Netflix release on December 11, 2024. See Netflix’s official film page.

That return came after a stretch in which Vanity Fair identified her last screen appearance before Maria as the 2021 ensemble film Eternals. Screen appearances, filming dates, release dates, and directing work are different measures of activity, so a gap between releases does not mean she stopped working altogether.
Does Jolie plan to act more often?
There is no confirmed schedule. Asked in 2024 whether Maria would lead to more acting, Jolie told the AP, “There’s not a clear map.” The interview did not name a next role or timetable.

Her more recent comments suggest she is open to choosing new parts. In a June 20, 2026 San Francisco Chronicle interview, Jolie said that after a challenging decade and several characters shaped by trauma and pain, she felt some of her “fight and fire” returning. She said she wanted roles with “a little more of that life force and good energy,” including ones with joy, boldness, and a punk edge. That describes what she hopes to find in a role, not a confirmed project or promise to work at a particular pace. Read the San Francisco Chronicle interview.
