Ang Pangarap ni Kruko is a Filipino storybook about a young character who wants to become famous, experiments in imagination with changing his appearance, and eventually learns to value who he is and work toward his dream. The Department of Education (DepEd) lists it as a PDF learning material for Grades 1–3.
What is Ang Pangarap ni Kruko about?
The story begins with a question to young readers: “Ano ba ang gusto ninyong maging paglaki ninyo?” Kruko wants to be famous and wonders whether changing his appearance will help him achieve that ambition.
After seeing flowers, he imagines having colorful wings, but decides they do not suit his strong body. He asks animal friends for suggestions. The monkey proposes a thin tail, Ullaw suggests large eyes, the horse suggests unusual feet, and the carabao suggests horns. Kruko rejects each idea because it feels unsuitable or frightening.
Tired and discouraged, Kruko sees his reflection in clear river water. He recognizes that he is a special creation with his own form and the ability to do good for others. He later tells Daga that a dream can be attained through diligence. The story’s closing lesson includes the line, “Ang pangarap ay makakamtan sa pagiging masipag.”

What can children discuss after reading?
The plot gives adults and children several concrete ways to talk about the story without treating its moral as a one-size-fits-all rule.
- Ambition and identity: What does Kruko hope to achieve, and why does he first think his appearance needs to change?
- Prediction and evidence: Before Kruko sees his reflection, what might help him feel better? Which events in the story support that prediction?
- Animal traits: Recall each friend’s suggestion and discuss why Kruko accepts or rejects it.
- Effort and helping: What does Kruko tell Daga about reaching a dream? What does the story say about doing good for others?
- Music connection: Because DepEd links the book to rhythm and tempo, a teacher can invite pupils to notice or create a rhythm while retelling a scene; the catalog does not prescribe a particular activity.
The closing lesson says, “Tanggapin maging sino kaman. Magtiwala sa Diyos at sa iyong sarili kasama ang paggawa ng mabuti para sa iba.” This is the book’s own religiously framed message: accept who you are, trust in God and yourself, and do good for others.
