What is New Blue Sun?
The Associated Press describes the album as a six-track instrumental ambient alt-jazz work, with particular attention to flute. That focus does not mean it is simply a solo flute record: the Recording Academy describes the live approach as collective group improvisation, with the musicians listening and responding to one another.
Explaining his interest in wind instruments to the AP, André 3000 said: “Flutes — wind instruments in general — are the closest thing you get to actually hearing a human.” In Revolt’s account of his Colbert interview, he described how playing developed into a project he wanted to share: “I discovered [the] flute and I started playing it over and over again for years, and I felt like it would be great to share it, so it kinda came in a natural way,”
