In an interview discussed by MusicRadar, Watt also described making music with Lady Gaga, including “Abracadabra” and “Die With a Smile.”
Why did Andrew Watt defend the Stones’ Grammy win?
The Rolling Stones won the 2025 Grammy for Best Rock Album for Hackney Diamonds, which Watt produced. The award, presented earlier that month, drew criticism from people who argued that a younger band should have won. Watt’s response was not an account of how Academy members voted; it was his defense of the album’s achievement.
“They are in their 80s,” Watt said, pointing to the band members’ ages. “They’re 82 and 83 years old. Tell me another band ever in history that has made a latter-day album that good in their 80s, with that level of songwriting, that level of performance?” His case rested on the record’s songwriting and performance as well as the accomplishment of making such an album late in the band’s career.
That is Watt’s reasoning, not an official explanation of the Recording Academy’s decision. The available coverage does not establish the full set of nominees or the voters’ rationale.

What did Watt say about Lady Gaga’s “Mayhem”?
Watt co-wrote and co-produced “Abracadabra,” a song on Gaga’s Mayhem. He described a quick, collaborative process: Gaga heard an idea, went to the microphone and began singing, then developed the material with piano chords and synthesizer parts.
“She [Gaga] just heard something immediately, and grabbed the microphone and started flowing in the room,” Watt said. His account emphasizes how the initial idea developed through performance and arrangement in the studio.

Could the Stones release another album?
Watt said the Hackney Diamonds sessions produced additional unreleased material. He did not confirm that another Rolling Stones album was planned, saying the decision belonged to the band.
“I can’t tell you if [another album’s] gonna happen or not,” Watt said. “It’s up to them, but it would be great… Why not finish the material, you know?” His remarks point to unused recordings and his interest in completing them, not to a confirmed release.
