The clearest description comes from cinematographer Christophe Nuyens, who said the scripts read “like a spy movie in the Star Wars universe.” Official production notes point instead to Northern Italian settings and World War II resistance fighters as influences on Ghorman’s design and costumes.
Which movie inspired episodes 4–6?
The available production evidence does not name a controversial Star Wars film as the source for this episode block. That distinction matters: a viewer may recognize similarities or interpret the episodes through the lens of another movie, but resemblance is not confirmation of a production influence.
In a Panavision interview, cinematographer Christophe Nuyens described the scripts as reading “like a spy movie in the Star Wars universe.” He was discussing the episodes’ genre and approach, not naming a franchise film they borrowed from.
Why do the Ghorman episodes feel like a spy thriller?
The three episodes—“Ever Been to Ghorman?”, “I Have Friends Everywhere,” and “What a Festive Evening”—follow the Ghorman crisis as it begins to heat up in 3 BBY, according to the official episode guide. Nuyens said the first production block covered episodes four through six on Ghorman and that the scripts read like a spy movie. The interview supports a spy-thriller characterization, not a specific film-to-film borrowing claim.

The setting reinforces that atmosphere. Nuyens described Ghorman as imagined somewhere in the Italian mountains in winter, with cold sunlight and dark visuals. Damián García, another cinematographer on the series, compared Andor’s sensibility to 1970s films including The Conversation and The French Connection. Those are visual and tonal comparisons; they do not establish either film as the direct source of this episode arc.
What real-world influences shaped Ghorman?
Lucasfilm’s official production trivia identifies several specific design references: Ghorman’s architecture and culture drew on Turin in Northern Italy, as well as Mecca and Medina. Costumes for the Ghorman Front drew on French and Italian resistance fighters during World War II. The same feature reports that the outdoor Ghorman set extended more than 500 feet—a production detail, not a measure of the story’s scale or impact.

These documented references help explain why the setting can evoke historical resistance movements and European political thrillers. They are distinct from a claim that the episodes borrowed from a controversial Star Wars movie.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens in the arc—and what is interpretation?
The official episode guide places the episodes in the 3 BBY Ghorman storyline. Coverage by The Ringer reads the arc as a clash between urgency and caution: rebels confront an Imperial trap while disagreeing about the risks of escalating resistance. That is critical interpretation, not an official statement of the filmmakers’ intent.
