In the interview, MacDowell said, “I’m happier now than I have been in a long time.” E!’s January 24, 2025 account of the conversation reports that she had moved to South Carolina and was taking care of herself. The quote describes how she felt at the time of that interview; it does not establish her circumstances or address today. E! Online’s report is a secondary account, rather than an official transcript.

Why the move came after a difficult transition
MacDowell connected her emotional adjustment to her children leaving home. She said their departure left her with a “huge void” because they had been so important to her, and that adjusting took a long time. Her later description of feeling happier therefore does not suggest that moving immediately erased the difficulty; it came after a period of adapting to a changed family life.
E!’s account also reports that her daughter Margaret Qualley encouraged her to build a life after the children left home. That detail comes from coverage of the interview and should be understood as the report’s account of their conversation, not as independent confirmation of private discussions.

What “leaving Hollywood” means—and what it doesn’t
In this story, “leaving Hollywood” refers to MacDowell’s reported move from Los Angeles to South Carolina. It does not mean she announced an end to her acting career. E! identifies her with Four Weddings and a Funeral and notes entertainment work including The Way Home; that context supports distinguishing a relocation from retirement, not making claims about her current projects or schedule.
A separate January 24, 2025 report by Southern Living, republished by Yahoo Lifestyle, says MacDowell described finding community in South Carolina, including people around her age. That is secondary reporting about the same period, not confirmation of her present residence or a precise location. Yahoo Lifestyle’s republication offers that additional account.
