Luffy’s Gears are different ways of applying his Devil Fruit abilities in combat—not a numbered ladder where each form permanently replaces the last. Gear 2 emphasizes speed; Gear 3 is named as a separate technique; Gear 4 has several named forms; and Gear 5 is tied to the awakening of the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Spoiler warning: the Gear 5 section discusses a major Wano reveal.
What are all of Luffy’s Gears?
The four numbered Gears are Gear 2, Gear 3, Gear 4, and Gear 5. Gear 4 includes the named forms Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman. The official episode summaries establish some forms’ combat roles and story contexts more clearly than others, so the distinctions below stick to what those accounts show rather than treating fan shorthand as a complete technical specification.
| Form | What the official episode accounts establish | Story context |
|---|---|---|
| Gear 2 | Speed-focused combat; Luffy moves faster than Soru, and steam rises from his body. | Enies Lobby |
| Gear 3 | Named as a distinct Gear; the episode listing does not provide enough detail here to explain its mechanics. | Enies Lobby |
| Gear 4: Boundman | Elastic, Haki-coated resistance and extended attacks are shown. | Dressrosa, against Doflamingo |
| Gear 4: Tankman | Named as a Gear 4 variant; the episode listing places it in the fight with Cracker. | Whole Cake Island, against Cracker |
| Gear 4: Snakeman | Named as a new Gear 4 form during the battle with Katakuri. | Whole Cake Island, against Katakuri |
| Gear 5 | Associated with the awakened Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika; its fighting is shown as free-form and highly elastic. | Debuts in Wano; later appears against Lucci in Egghead |
What does Gear 2 do?
Gear 2 is presented as a speed-focused combat style. In the official summary for Episode 273, set during the Enies Lobby story, steam pours from Luffy’s body as he moves faster than Soru, the high-speed technique used by CP9. The episode aired on July 30, 2006.
The name also appears in the title of volume 40, which collects chapters 378–388. The episode account supports the speed emphasis, but it does not supply a comprehensive explanation of every mechanical detail or limitation.

What is Gear 3?
Gear 3 is a separately named Gear introduced in the Enies Lobby story. The official listing for Episode 304 identifies it in the title “I Can’t Protect Anyone Unless I Win! Gear 3 Begins” and links the episode to volume 44, chapters 420–430.
That listing does not provide enough detail to establish the technique’s precise mechanics or its early post-use drawback. The later Episode 798 listing places Gear 2 and Gear 3 in use during Luffy’s fight with Cracker, showing that Luffy continues to use earlier Gears as the story progresses.

What are the Gear 4 forms?
Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman are named Gear 4 variants, not a simple universal sequence of upgrades. The official episode accounts connect each to a different fight and reveal different amounts about how it works.
Boundman
In Episode 726, Luffy faces Doflamingo in the air in Dressrosa. The official summary describes him resisting attacks while coated in Armament Haki and using elasticity to pursue his opponent with extended attacks, including Python. That supports describing Boundman as a forceful, elastic form with reach and resistance; it does not establish a formal ranking of its attributes against the other variants.

Tankman
Episode 806 names “New Gear 4 Tankman” during Luffy’s fight with Cracker. The official listing establishes the form’s name and the fight in which it appears, but does not give enough detail to make a sourced comparison of its defensive qualities or physical shape.
Snakeman
Episode 870 names Snakeman during Luffy’s ongoing battle with Katakuri in Whole Cake Island. The summary also recalls Luffy’s training with Rayleigh. It confirms that Snakeman is a new Gear 4 form, but does not provide enough detail for a complete speed or attack comparison with Boundman and Tankman.

What limit does Gear 4 show?
Gear 4 has a clear recovery cost in Luffy’s fight with Doflamingo. Episode 729 describes Luffy exceeding the form’s limit and collapsing; he cannot fight while recovering, and the summary gives a ten-minute interval before he can use Haki again. This is the outcome of that specific fight, not evidence that every Gear 4 use has an identical timer.

Spoilers for the Wano story: Episode 1071 links Gear 5 to the awakening of the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika—the ability previously associated with the Gum-Gum Fruit’s other name. The episode identifies Nika as the Warrior of Liberation and presents the power as exceptionally free-form and comic in battle. Luffy uses that elasticity to fight Kaido in ways that sharply contrast with the more focused combat roles shown for earlier Gears. The episode aired on August 6, 2023.

Episode 1072 shows Luffy bouncing off the ground, expanding dramatically, and using Kaido like a jump rope. The same sequence also shows visible strain: Gear 5 drops, Luffy’s hair returns to black, and he appears aged before regaining the form. That scene demonstrates exertion, but does not establish a universal recovery pattern for every use.
Gear 5 is not confined to the Wano debut. Episode 1100 later shows Luffy using it against Lucci in Egghead; Vegapunk connects the form with Nika and the Warrior of Liberation.
How do the Gears fit together?
The Gears mark changing combat approaches across the story, from Gear 2 at Enies Lobby to Gear 4’s distinct variants in Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island, and Gear 5 in Wano. They are not simply successive replacements: the Episode 798 account, for example, places Gear 2 and Gear 3 in use during the later Cracker fight.
The clearest distinctions supported by the official episode accounts are Gear 2’s speed, Boundman’s elastic resistance and reach, the scene-specific recovery cost shown for Gear 4, and Gear 5’s free-form elasticity. For Gear 3’s exact mechanics and the detailed functional differences between Tankman and Snakeman, those summaries leave important specifics unstated.
