In Priya Satia’s account, Amitabh Bachchan’s hold on viewers did not depend on portraying perfect heroes. His characters could be wounded, foolish, compromised or difficult—and still feel lovable. In a personal essay published for his 80th birthday, the historian asks how those roles became bound up with private memories of family, migration and belonging.
What Priya Satia’s essay is—and is not
Satia’s October 16, 2022 essay in Scroll.in is an interpretation of attachment, not a definitive biography or a survey of what every Bachchan fan thinks. She writes as a historian but also from first-person memory: childhood viewings, a sketch she says she mailed to Bachchan and a reply she says she received in 1988, and a brief meeting in 1991. Those episodes illuminate her argument; they are her recollections, not population-level evidence.
Her central idea is that the imperfections of Bachchan’s screen characters helped make them recognizable. “As much as we admire and aspire to virtuousness, Bachchan’s characters, whatever their over-the-top heroic antics, more accurately captured the reality of what it is to be human: deeply, and often everlastingly flawed, but nonetheless loveable and forgiveable.” The point is not that audiences approve of every character’s choices. Rather, a character can be morally compromised or emotionally damaged and still invite affection.
More than the angry young man
Bachchan’s popular image is often compressed into the “angry young man,” but Satia’s account makes room for a broader range of performances. She moves among the wounded anti-hero and taciturn romantic, the awkward middle-class figure in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s films, and the comic, flamboyant performer. The Directorate of Film Festivals’ 57th National Film Awards catalogue independently lists several films she discusses, including Sholay, Don and Deewaar.

Wounded agency and heroic action
In films such as Zanjeer and Deewaar, Satia considers characters marked by grievance, pain or constrained choices. Their force comes not from uncomplicated virtue but from the way injury and anger shape what they do. Even the larger-than-life hero can carry recognizable wounds.
Comedy, awkwardness and romance
The essay also resists treating Bachchan’s appeal as exclusively stern or combative. His comic and awkward performances, including work in Mukherjee films, and his romantic roles show a performer able to be foolish, uncertain or exposed. This range matters to Satia because affection can arise from vulnerability as readily as from power.

Sacrifice and compromised conduct
Other roles place sacrifice, childhood trauma or ethically compromised behavior at the center of a character’s story. Satia’s grouping makes room for the contradiction: a person can cause harm or fail morally and remain legible as human. That tension is more complicated than either an idealized hero or a simple condemnation.
How films become part of family memory
For Satia, Bachchan’s films are not just stories watched and then left behind. She describes Hindi-language popular cinema as a way she and her family, living in the United States after being uprooted from home, could feel connected to a place and culture they missed. A familiar film could become part of the texture of family life and a shared sense of belonging.

That personal account helps explain how a screen character may matter beyond the plot. A role can become attached to who watched it with you, where you were, and what home meant at the time. Satia extends that reflection to diaspora and cultural memory, while treating the films as a complicated repository of pluralist ideals—not as uncomplicated proof that the society around them lived up to those ideals.
The screen persona and the public figure remain in tension
Satia does not resolve the distance between Bachchan’s expansive screen roles and the public figure she interprets as reticent. Her criticism of his public conduct and politics belongs to her essay’s argument; it should be read as her judgment, not as a settled finding established by the film catalogue. The tension is part of what makes her account ambivalent: she can question the public figure while still asking why the performances mattered so deeply.

That question is captured in another line from the essay: “Why does it matter to meet for an instant someone we adore from afar, for whom we are no one in particular?” Satia’s answer is less about celebrity access than about the meaning viewers build around performance. A brief encounter, a remembered scene or a familiar face can hold private histories that the star could never know in full.

Satia’s argument is not that Bachchan’s characters were all alike, or that all audiences responded in the same way. It is that their contradictions offered viewers something more durable than flawless virtue: people who could be hurt, ridiculous, compromised or loving without becoming wholly reducible to any one trait. Across comedy, romance, melodrama and action, that imperfect humanity could meet audiences where their own memories already lived.
