After Taylor Fritz beat Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2024 Australian Open, broadcaster Adam Peacock brought up a reported promise from Fritz’s girlfriend, Morgan Riddle: if Fritz won, she would eat a jar of Vegemite on Instagram Live. A jar appeared during Fritz’s on-court interview, turning the promise into a playful post-match moment.
What happened after Fritz’s win?
Fritz had just defeated Tsitsipas in the fourth round when interviewer Adam Peacock asked why he had pointed toward his supporters and said, “I told you.” Fritz replied, “My girlfriend thought I was too confident going into the match,” according to PerthNow’s 22 January 2024 report.
Peacock then told the crowd that Riddle had said she would eat “a jar of Vegemite on Instagram Live” if Fritz won again. He added, “But a bet’s a bet,” and a jar was handed to him during the interview. The promise was relayed by Peacock; it was not a direct statement from Riddle on court.
Did Morgan Riddle eat the whole jar?
No. Tennis.com reported that Riddle tried some Vegemite on an Instagram livestream the following day, describing it as a spoonful. The coverage supports saying she tried some, not that she finished the jar.

How did Fritz beat Tsitsipas?
Fritz won 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, according to Tennis.com. The International Tennis Federation’s 2024 Australian Open day-eight match notes list the matchup as No. 7 Tsitsipas against No. 12 Fritz; those numbers are the tournament document’s event-era seedings.
Why was Vegemite part of the joke?
Vegemite, an Australian yeast-extract spread, was the food named in Riddle’s reported wager. The joke hinged on the contrast between Fritz’s confidence before the match and the unusually large-sounding forfeit Peacock announced after the win. The live exchange made the promise part of the celebration, while Riddle’s reported spoonful supplied the follow-through.
