Paula Abdul sued television producer Nigel Lythgoe in Los Angeles in December 2023, alleging sexual assault and related misconduct connected to her work on American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. Lythgoe denied the allegations. The Associated Press reported in December 2024 that the parties had agreed to settle, but the settlement terms were not disclosed and court approval was still pending at the time. The final court disposition has not been confirmed by the available reporting.
What did Paula Abdul allege?
Abdul’s civil complaint alleged two incidents during her professional association with Lythgoe. It placed one in the early period of her work on American Idol and described another during their later association with So You Think You Can Dance. These are allegations in a civil pleading, not findings by a court. The complaint is the primary source for the claims; the Associated Press also summarized them in its initial coverage.
How did Nigel Lythgoe respond?
Lythgoe denied Abdul’s allegations, according to the Associated Press’s initial report. The available sources establish the allegation and his denial, but do not establish that a court ruled on the truth of either position.
Did Paula Abdul and Nigel Lythgoe settle?
Yes. On December 13, 2024, the Associated Press reported that Abdul had filed a notice of settlement in Los Angeles Superior Court and that the filing described the settlement as unconditional. The financial terms were not disclosed. At the time of that report, court approval was still pending. CBS also reported the settlement announcement and that its terms were not disclosed.

Abdul told the Associated Press: “I am grateful that this chapter has successfully come to a close and that I can now put it behind me.” That was her statement about the reported settlement; it does not establish that the court later approved it or entered a final dismissal.
What is known about the case’s court status?
The case is identified in legal-industry coverage as Paula Abdul v. Nigel Lythgoe et al., Los Angeles Superior Court case 23STCV31886. That coverage said trial had been scheduled for August 2025 before the settlement was reported. The available settlement reports do not confirm the later docket outcome. As of October 7, 2026, the final court disposition remains unverified here; it would be inaccurate to state that the case was finally dismissed or that the court approved the settlement without a current court record.
