The six-episode Prime Video series keeps the game’s characters, setting and 1995/2005 framework, but its original-script story changes the events and motivations that give the game’s central relationship its shape. That trade-off can make sense on television, yet it also weakens the series’ connection to the source game’s particular narrative identity.
Is Amazon’s Like a Dragon: Yakuza faithful to the game?
Not closely in its central plot. Amazon describes the Japanese-language series as an original-script crime suspense action drama. It retains Kazuma Kiryu, Akira Nishikiyama, Kamurocho, yakuza conflict and a story moving between 1995 and 2005, but it is not presented as a scene-by-scene recreation of the first game. Amazon’s description and the Prime Video listing frame the series around four friends drawn toward the underworld in 1995 and the consequences of their fractured friendship a decade later.
The clearest contrast is the inciting premise. In SEGA’s synopsis for Yakuza Kiwami, the remake of the first game, Kiryu takes responsibility for a killing, serves ten years in prison and returns to Kamurocho amid a mystery involving a girl and 100 billion yen. The show also uses the 1995/2005 frame, but its past timeline begins with the young friends’ movement into the yakuza world; its present timeline follows the damage done to their bonds. What does the series change about Kiryu and Nishikiyama?
The adaptation’s most consequential changes are not simply omissions; they alter the reasons characters act and the emotional weight of their choices. In a review for MeriStation, Alejandro Castillo argues that the series changes motivations and the events leading into 2005, diminishing the force of Kiryu and Nishikiyama’s relationship as it functions in the game. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus measure, but it points to why fidelity here is about more than familiar names or visual references: the game’s plot makes their bond central to its tragedy, while the series builds a different crime-family story around the two men. Castillo’s review also notes that the game itself has elements that have aged poorly.

Why can it work better as a mob drama?
Television has different demands from an interactive game. The series’ two timelines let it place the characters’ youthful entry into organized crime beside the strained relationships and clan conflict of 2005. Its official synopsis foregrounds a stolen 10-billion-yen dispute and tension between the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance, giving the show a crime-family framework that can carry viewers who have no prior attachment to the game’s plot. That structure is a legitimate adaptation choice, even if it replaces some of the source story’s particular causes and emotional beats.
The result can be judged on two separate questions. Does the show offer a workable drama about loyalty, ambition and a damaged friendship? It has a clear basis for doing so in its time-jump structure and yakuza conflict. Does it preserve the specific narrative identity of the first game? The changed inciting situation and motivations make that case harder. Calling it a stronger mob drama than adaptation is therefore a critical judgment about what the series emphasizes, not proof that it has no relationship to the games or that all fans will respond the same way.

Does the series improve the treatment of supporting characters?
One counterargument to a strict fidelity test is that the game’s story is not beyond criticism, and a television version can use its space differently. Castillo’s review says the series gives more room to Yumi and other characters. Expanding supporting roles may help a screen drama feel less narrowly organized around the game’s central male rivalry. That gain does not erase the adaptation cost: if the altered motivations also reduce the force of Kiryu and Nishikiyama’s relationship, broader character coverage and fidelity pull in different directions rather than settling the argument.
What did the creators intend?
In a July 2024 SEGAbits interview, executive producer Erik Barmack described the ambition as finding a story “that is specifically local but also Global in its scope.” He said the production was in Japanese, with Japanese stars and a Japanese director, and that the team shared scripts with SEGA and received notes. Barmack also said the production aimed to stay true to the story’s core emotions. Those remarks describe the team’s stated approach; they do not establish that the finished show reproduces the game’s plot or that viewers agree on its success. Do you need to play Yakuza before watching?
No. Amazon’s series is an original-script drama, and its conflict and two-timeline structure can be followed as a standalone crime story. Playing the source game matters if you want to compare the altered premise and character motivations rather than simply watch the show on its own terms.
Which game makes the most direct comparison?
Yakuza Kiwami is SEGA’s full remake of the original first game and the most direct source-game comparison. It is not an official companion product for the television series. Its account of Kiryu’s imprisonment and return makes the difference in story construction especially clear. SEGA’s release notice describes the remake and summarizes its premise.

What is the series, and where was it released?
Like a Dragon: Yakuza is a six-episode Japanese-language Amazon Original that began streaming on Prime Video on 25 October 2024. At launch, Amazon said it would be available in more than 240 countries and regions; SEGA said subtitles and dubs were offered in more than 30 languages.
