Kindle Vella is no longer available: Amazon ended the serialized-story service effective February 26, 2025. Stories and episodes can no longer be purchased, but readers who bought episodes before the shutdown can still access them in free Kindle apps. Former Vella authors can republish their work as eBooks through Kindle Direct Publishing.
What happened to Kindle Vella?
Amazon announced the wind-down in October 2024, saying Vella “didn’t catch on as we’d hoped.” The company’s Kindle Vella Update FAQ gives February 26, 2025 as the effective end date. Vella stories and episodes are no longer available to buy on Amazon.com.
Amazon has not published a quantified explanation of the service’s performance in the sources available here. Its stated reason is qualitative; there are no substantiated audience, sales, or revenue figures to explain the decision.
What Kindle Vella was
Amazon launched Kindle Vella in the United States on July 13, 2021 as a mobile-first serialized reading service. Authors released stories in short installments, and readers could follow a story as new episodes appeared. At launch, the service was available in the Kindle iOS app and on Amazon.com.

| Launch-era feature | How it worked |
|---|---|
| Episode length | 600–5,000 words per episode, according to Amazon’s 2021 launch announcement. |
| Opening episodes | The first three episodes of each story were free at launch; this was not an offer that continued after the shutdown. |
| Later episodes | Readers used purchased Tokens to unlock episodes after the free opening installments. |
| Reader and author features | Launch features included story tags, follows and release notifications, thumbs-up reactions, weekly favorites, author notes, and sharing. |
These details describe Vella at launch, not current options. The service has closed, so there are no Vella stories or episodes to purchase now.
Can readers still access episodes they unlocked?
Yes. Amazon says customers who purchased episodes before closure can continue reading them in the free Kindle apps for Fire tablets, iOS, and Android. This continued access applies to previously purchased episodes; it does not restore Vella sales or make other episodes available to buy.

Can former authors republish Vella stories as eBooks?
Amazon encourages former Vella authors to republish their stories as eBooks so readers can continue discovering them. Its KDP FAQ points authors to Kindle Create, an eBook manuscript-formatting guide, and KDP preparation resources for eBook and print books. These are Amazon’s suggested resources; the FAQ does not establish a need to buy a device or third-party publishing tool.
Can former authors still access Vella reports?
No. The Kindle Vella Dashboard in KDP Reports is no longer available. Amazon says payment information remains accessible in the Payments statement.
