Its production used real landscapes and heritage locations in Cornwall, Derbyshire and Wales, as well as filming in Spain and Portugal. The finished scenes also combine those places with studio work and visual effects, so a screen location is not necessarily a literal view of the real site.
Where was House of the Dragon filmed?
Westeros is fictional, but the series’ filming footprint spans England, Wales, Spain and Portugal. VisitBritain describes England as the main filming base overall, while season one’s principal locations included Spain, Cornwall and Derbyshire, alongside studio work at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire. These descriptions cover the production broadly; they do not mean that every season filmed in every region. VisitBritain’s location guide, Visit Wales and the Welsh Government’s season-two announcement identify the footprint.
For specific, named places, Cornwall and North Wales have the clearest official location information. Derbyshire’s Peak District appears in both seasons one and two, while the available official sources do not provide an equally detailed list of Spanish or Portuguese sites.
Cornwall: Driftmark and the Stepstones
Visit Cornwall identifies three recognizable filming locations. The real places are in Cornwall; their fictional identities belong to the show’s story. See Visit Cornwall’s filming-location guide for the site associations.
#1 Best Overall
| Real location | On-screen setting and season | What the source identifies |
|---|---|---|
| St Michael’s Mount | High Tide, on Driftmark; season one | The castle and grounds stand in for the Velaryon seat. The causeway appears during the episode-five journey to High Tide, and the site is used in episode seven. |
| Holywell Bay | Beach below High Tide and other beach scenes; season one, with use again during season-two filming | Visit Cornwall connects it to War of the Stepstones material, the nighttime meeting of Rhaenyra and Daemon, and Aemond’s encounter with Vhagar in episode seven. |
| Kynance Cove | The Stepstones; episode three of season one | Identified with Daemon’s offensive and the Velaryon war-council scenes. |
What to know before visiting Cornwall
Kynance Cove can be busy from July through September, and summer parking is limited, according to Visit Cornwall. Check current access, parking, weather and tide information before travelling. A filming-location match does not establish that every point shown on screen is accessible or that the finished scene looks exactly like the real site.
Derbyshire and the Peak District
Peak District countryside appears in seasons one and two. VisitBritain specifically names Castleton and Cave Dale, and Visit Wales independently includes Derbyshire among season one’s main filming regions. The available location descriptions do not establish a fictional identity for every street, valley or quarry in the area, so it is better to stick to those named places than to assign a Westerosi setting to an entire landscape. See VisitBritain and Visit Wales.
North Wales: season two and season three
Season two: Anglesey and Gwynedd
Season two used eight locations across Anglesey and Gwynedd. Visit Wales names Llanddwyn Beach, near Newborough, and Beaumaris Pier. The Welsh Government reported that the five-week shoot employed more than 250 local crew members; that is a figure for that production period, not a measure of continuing employment. The Welsh Government announcement provides the regional details, and Visit Wales’ guide names the locations.
Season three: filming in summer 2025
VisitBritain names Craig Yr Undeb (Union Rock) at Lake Padarn, Ffynnon Llugwy in the Carneddau, Beaumaris Pier, Llanddwyn Beach and Newborough Forest as season-three filming locations. A Welsh Government announcement published on 17 March 2026 reports that filming took place in summer 2025 across Anglesey, Conwy and Gwynedd, and specifically lists Beaumaris Pier, Craig Yr Undeb and Ffynnon Llugwy. Read the VisitBritain guide and the Welsh Government’s season-three announcement for those location details.

The latter is an expectation reported in the 2026 announcement, not a measured tourism result. The same announcement describes filming and production-workforce opportunities, not visitor numbers.
Planning a North Wales visit
Visit Wales warns that Llanddwyn Beach can be very busy in peak season. Check current access, parking and local guidance, and be considerate of nearby communities. Conditions can change, so consult current site information before setting out.
Rank #4
Spain, Portugal and the studio base
Official sources identify Spain and Portugal as filming countries, and Visit Wales and the Welsh Government place Spain among season one’s principal filming regions. They do not provide a comparably detailed, cross-checked list of particular Spanish or Portuguese locations. Leavesden in Hertfordshire is the documented major studio base for season one. Avoid treating locations associated with Game of Thrones or unverified fan lists as confirmed House of the Dragon sites.
The distinction matters when comparing a scene with a real destination: location filming is only one part of what appears on screen. Studio work and visual effects also shape the settings, and the available location information does not promise access to a filming set or an identical view at the real-world site.

How to plan a filming-location visit
- Match the place to the scene. Use the named, season-specific associations above rather than assuming every nearby landscape appeared in the series.
- Check access close to your visit. Confirm current attraction or landowner guidance, local restrictions, transport, parking, weather and—at coastal locations—tide conditions.
- Plan for crowds where relevant. Visit Cornwall flags summer crowding and limited parking at Kynance Cove; Visit Wales notes that Llanddwyn Beach can be very busy in peak season.
- Set expectations. These are real destinations, not guaranteed set tours. A site may be open to visitors without every filming point being reachable, and the screen version may differ from the place you see.
