Pteranodon also appears in the post-credits scene; it is a flying reptile, not a dinosaur in strict scientific classification. Characters, hybrids, and other prehistoric creatures
Blue and Rexy are individual animals
Blue is the named Velociraptor in the film, not a separate species. Tyrannosaurus rex is also represented by a named individual, commonly called Rexy in franchise discussion. Counting these character names as species would inflate the roster.

Indoraptor is a fictional hybrid
The Indoraptor is an engineered hybrid created for the story, not a naturally occurring dinosaur species. It belongs on a separate list of fictional hybrids, rather than among the roster’s named taxa.
Pteranodon appears after the credits
Pteranodon is a flying reptile, not a dinosaur under strict paleontological classification. The film reference reports that its footage was reinserted as a post-credits scene before release. It belongs in a broader list of prehistoric creatures that appear in the film, provided the list counts post-credits footage.

Which creatures are new to the series?
The film-specific reference identifies Allosaurus, Baryonyx, Carnotaurus, Sinoceratops, and Stygimoloch as new dinosaur inclusions for the series. “New” here means new to the film series, not newly discovered species or creatures invented for this movie.
Why there is no definitive species total
The 15 entries above are the named dinosaur taxa in the cited film-specific reference, not an independently verified census of every creature visible onscreen. Universal’s official listing establishes the movie’s 2018 release, director J.A. Bayona, and volcano-rescue premise, but does not publish a complete dinosaur checklist. The companion book’s publisher listing names subjects including Blue, Tyrannosaurus rex, and Mosasaurus; it does not establish a complete taxonomy. For the same reason, a precise total can change depending on whether a count includes hybrids, flying reptiles, the post-credits sequence, and unnamed animals in the background. A Dilophosaurus scene was in the script but was cut, so it should not be included in a list of creatures that appear in the finished film.

The franchise uses real prehistoric animals as inspiration, but its portrayals are not a complete guide to paleontology. In a June 22, 2018 report, TIME noted that the films’ Velociraptor is larger than the real animal and that the movie depictions omit feathers. Paleontologist Jack Horner told TIME that relatively little is known about Carnotaurus, including what its unusual teeth indicate about its diet. Smithsonian curator Matthew T. Carrano praised the franchise for conveying that dinosaurs were active, successful living animals. These comments provide dated context, not an endorsement of every detail in the film.
