The shows had been booked before Isbell filed for divorce in December 2023. Shires discussed the marriage and its aftermath more directly in interviews connected to her 2025 album Nobody’s Girl—not at Red Rocks.
Why Amanda Shires and Jason Isbell shared a bill after their split
The timeline helps explain the booking without claiming to know either artist’s private reasons. Americana Highways reported that the concerts had been booked before Isbell filed for divorce in December 2023. Shires opened for Isbell and the 400 Unit at Denver’s Mission Ballroom on May 2, 2024, and was scheduled to open at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, on May 3. Americana Highways’ review describes the booking chronology.
The available reporting establishes when the shows were arranged and when they took place or were scheduled. It does not establish why either artist chose to perform together after the separation, or how either felt about doing so. The Red Rocks date should be described as scheduled in contemporaneous coverage; the cited reports do not independently confirm that the May 3 performance took place.
What happened at the Denver concert
At the May 2 Mission Ballroom show, Shires played an 11-song opening set. Rolling Stone reported that she referred onstage to being a single parent and changed an opening lyric during “Stupid Love.” Isbell thanked her afterward and praised the performance: “I’ve seen a lot of Amanda Shires sets, but that was one of my very favorites. It was a real honor and a real pleasure to have her and her fantastic band out here.” Rolling Stone’s account of the Denver show reports those details.

Those were public moments at one performance, not proof of an unspoken message or a complete account of the divorce. Lyrics and brief stage remarks should not be treated as verified autobiography beyond what Shires herself said.
What Isbell said publicly in early 2024
In February 2024, Isbell addressed the split on a podcast. Rolling Stone quoted him saying, “I think I’m just going to try and be honest in all the ways I legally can. There’s certain things we’ve agreed not to talk about.” The comments acknowledged limits the former couple had agreed to observe publicly; they were not a full explanation of the marriage or its end. Rolling Stone’s report on Isbell’s remarks provides that context.

When Shires spoke more directly about the divorce
In May 2024, Rolling Stone noted that neither artist had spoken in depth about the divorce. Shires’ more direct discussion came later, in coverage tied to Nobody’s Girl. A September 2025 episode description for Rolling Stone’s Nashville Now podcast says she discussed the end of her marriage and her independence in relation to the album. The episode description gives that broad framing; it should not be mistaken for a complete transcript.
In an interview published November 7, 2025, NPR discussed Shires’ initial uncertainty about writing about the divorce and the album she made in its aftermath. The interview connects the record to that period without turning the 2024 concert into a statement about the split. Read NPR’s interview with Shires.
