What the 2024 report actually said
On July 9, 2024, Entertainment Weekly reported that Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, Tucci, Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman were in talks to return. It also reported, citing a source close to the production, that McKenna was working on a screenplay. Disney declined the publication’s request for comment, and the story stressed that no original cast member had been fully confirmed at that point.
That distinction matters: the report described the project’s status in July 2024, not the eventual cast or the sequel’s later release. In the article, Frankel recalled an earlier conversation about whether a sequel made sense: “We had a meeting where we said, ‘What could we do if there was a sequel?’ Maybe it was stupid; we felt like, No, this story has been told.” His comment was retrospective and preceded the sequel’s development.
