Warner Bros.’ live-action Akira never went into production. In June 2025, reports said the studio’s adaptation rights had lapsed and reverted to manga publisher Kodansha. That ended Warner Bros.’ long-running version; it did not announce a replacement film. The sources available here do not establish whether Kodansha has since licensed a new adaptation.
What was Hollywood trying to adapt?
The proposed Hollywood film was an adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira manga, not simply a live-action remake of the 1988 animated film. The manga is the underlying source; the completed anime is a separate work and the most familiar screen version to compare with the unmade project. The development history is described broadly in the available reporting; the 1988 film background is summarized in the film reference.

Why did the Warner Bros. film never happen?
There is no single confirmed explanation for the many years of stalled development. The project passed through multiple development efforts and filmmakers, but the reporting supports a history of repeated delays rather than a definitive account of why each attempt ended. It would be misleading to treat every name in secondary summaries as a confirmed attachment or to assign the entire outcome to one cause.
Taika Waititi’s version reached a release-date announcement
The last Warner Bros. phase centered on director Taika Waititi. TheWrap reported in 2019 that the film, which had been scheduled for May 21, 2021, was put on hold after Waititi chose to direct Thor: Love and Thunder first. That was a significant interruption, but it does not by itself explain the full development history or prove that the film was otherwise ready to shoot. TheWrap’s 2019 report covered the hold.

How did the project’s status change in 2025?
In April 2025, producer Andrew Lazar was still publicly suggesting an update might come within the next couple of months, according to Bloody Disgusting’s April 18 report. That was a dated expression of expectation, not confirmation of an active production or a release plan.
In June 2025, Forbes and Nerdist reported that Warner Bros. had let its adaptation rights lapse and that they reverted to Kodansha. Forbes’ June 28 report and Nerdist’s June 30 report describe the rights change. A July 1 report from The Hollywood Reporter’s Spanish edition also covered the end of Warner Bros.’ adaptation. These reports establish the end of the Warner Bros. iteration, not a new film announcement. They do not establish the precise legal mechanics or whether Kodansha has made a later licensing deal.

Is a live-action Akira movie still happening?
There is no confirmed replacement live-action film in the reporting cited here: no new producer or director, production start, or release date is established. The clearest answer is that Warner Bros.’ version is over, while the wider question of whether another adaptation will be made remains unresolved.
