Counting Crows announced Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets! on May 9, 2025. The nine-track album continues the story begun on the band’s 2021 release Butter Miracle: Suite One. In interviews, frontman Adam Duritz has also discussed his own history with severe mental illness and dissociation. Those are connected parts of his public story, but his account is personal—not a universal explanation of mental illness.
What is the new Counting Crows album?
Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets! is Counting Crows’ first full-length studio album since Butter Miracle: Suite One in 2021, according to the band’s May 9, 2025 announcement. The group describes the new album as carrying forward the earlier release’s narrative thread. The announcement said it was available worldwide through BMG on release; it does not establish which physical formats or retailer listings are currently available.
What themes does the band connect to the album?
Counting Crows’ descriptions of the songs point to identity, belonging, connection, friendship, distance, social cruelty, marginalized communities, the pandemic and life on the road. These are the band’s own framings of the material, rather than independent interpretations of the lyrics.
- Identity and belonging: The band says “Spaceman in Tulsa” explores trying to find an identity in a place where someone feels they do not belong.
- Connection during isolation: “Under The Aurora,” in the band’s account, reflects a shared longing for connection during the pandemic.
- Social fractures and persecution: The band links “Boxcars” and “Angel of 14th Street” with societal divisions and the persecution of marginalized communities.
- Life on tour: “Elevator Boots” portrays the experience of being in a touring band.

What has Adam Duritz said about his mental-health history?
In a 2023 Los Angeles Times interview, Duritz said he had experienced severe mental illness, a subject he had not publicly discussed when earlier reviews of his work appeared. He recalled spending time at UCLA Medical Center in 2001 because he did not feel safe. He said he began to feel safe speaking about his experience around 2008, and that recognizing what was happening helped him understand his own experience.
In a 2025 interview with The Independent, the publication identifies Duritz’s experience as dissociative disorder. Describing his perception, he said, “The world seems like something you’re seeing at a distance,” then compared it to “watching a movie of your life going by.” That is Duritz’s description of what he experienced, not a clinical assessment or a description that should be assumed to apply to everyone with a dissociative disorder.

Why does Duritz resist being a mental-illness spokesperson?
Duritz has spoken about disclosure without claiming to represent other people. In the Los Angeles Times interview, he said, “Mental illness isn’t like breaking your leg,” and added, “I don’t really feel the responsibility to be everyone’s flag-bearer for mental illness.” His comments frame the limits of his public role: he can describe what happened to him, but he does not present his story as a template for others.
That distinction matters when connecting his personal history to the album. The band’s announcement describes songs concerned with belonging, connection and social fractures, while Duritz’s interviews offer his own account of mental illness and dissociation. The available statements do not establish that every song is autobiographical or that the album is a clinical account of his experience.
