Aattam is a 2024 Malayalam drama-thriller about what happens when a theater troupe must decide how to respond after its only actress says one of the men groped her. The film turns that urgent meeting into a study of gender dynamics: who gets heard, whose interests guide the discussion, and what consensus can mean when the people in the room do not share equal power.
What is Aattam about?
After a party among the theater group, Anjali, its sole actress, reports that one of the twelve men groped her. The troupe convenes an urgent meeting without the accused to consider expelling him. As the members argue, suspicions, competing accounts and disagreements surface.
That setup gives the film a focused dramatic engine. Rather than treating the allegation as a problem with a simple group-approved solution, the story asks how the group handles Anjali’s account—and what its process reveals about the people taking part. The meeting’s proposed consensus is not neutral: the men’s relationships and priorities shape the debate, while the woman at its center is the person whose experience is being discussed.
How does the film explore gender dynamics?
The film’s central subject is not only the alleged act but the collective response to it. A closed-room deliberation lets the audience watch how people negotiate credibility, responsibility and the consequences of taking a position. The group’s attempt to reach agreement becomes a source of tension in its own right.

Anjali is outnumbered, and the meeting takes place among people who must continue living and working with one another. The resulting debate brings the pressures around speaking up and being believed into the story’s dramatic structure rather than treating them as background context.
Is Aattam superbly performed?
The premise depends on an ensemble able to sustain a long, shifting discussion. The credited cast includes Zarin Shihab as Anjali, alongside Vinay Forrt, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Aji Thiruvamkulam, Nandhan Unni, Jolly Antony, Madan Babu, Prasanth Madhavan, Santhosh Murali, Selvaraj Raghavan, Sijin Sijeesh and Sudheer Babu. Their characters form the group at the center of the story.
Whether the performances feel superb is a judgment for viewers, not something established by the film’s credits or awards record. The ensemble premise makes performance and interaction important to the experience, but the available evidence does not justify presenting a personal viewing assessment as fact.
Why did Aattam win the National Film Award?
The Press Information Bureau announced on 16 August 2024 that Aattam (The Play), directed by Anand Ekarshi and produced by Joy Movie Productions LLP, won Best Feature Film at the 70th National Film Awards. The official results also list awards for Ekarshi’s original screenplay and Mahesh Bhuvanend’s editing. The award record establishes the film’s recognition; it does not by itself explain the jury’s reasoning.

One critical response offers another frame: Rotten Tomatoes surfaces a summary of Film Companion critic Vishal Menon’s review, published 4 January 2024, describing the film as a captivating thriller and a portrait of the multiple forms of abuse sexual-trauma survivors can face. That is one critic’s interpretation, not evidence of a universal critical consensus.
Is Aattam based on a true story?
The available sources do not establish that the film is based on a true story. Its subject may feel recognizable, but that is not evidence that its events or characters derive from a specific real case.
