Diddy’s most prominent documented feuds fall into two distinct arcs: the 1990s Bad Boy–Death Row rivalry, which unfolded amid the East Coast–West Coast rap conflict, and his on-and-off public dispute with 50 Cent. The first involved rival labels and ended against the backdrop of two tragic killings; the second shifted between collaboration, diss tracks, public jabs and periods of reduced tension. Here is what the reported timeline establishes—and what it does not.
1994–1996: Bad Boy and Death Row become rivals
The first major arc was bigger than a personal feud between Sean “Diddy” Combs and Suge Knight. It involved the labels and artists associated with them, and became part of a wider East Coast–West Coast rap rivalry. Bad Boy released The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die in 1994, while Knight’s Death Row was closely associated with Tupac Shakur. The two labels came to represent opposing sides of the conflict in public accounts of the era. The Associated Press’s Combs timeline provides the release and biographical context.
The 1995 Source Awards insult
At the August 1995 Source Awards, Knight took a public shot at Combs. The remark became a high-profile flashpoint in a rivalry that was increasingly playing out in front of audiences and through the music industry. ABC News’s account of the Combs–Knight rivalry recounts the moment.
“Hit ’Em Up” escalates the public conflict
In 1996, Tupac’s diss track “Hit ’Em Up” named Biggie, Combs and Bad Boy, further intensifying the public feud, according to ABC. The track’s accusations are part of the record of what was said; they are not proof of separate criminal allegations.

1996–1997: The rivalry’s tragic backdrop
Tupac was shot in Las Vegas in September 1996 and died six days later. Biggie was killed in Los Angeles in 1997. Their deaths punctuated the era’s rivalry, but the timing alone does not establish that the feud caused either murder or identify anyone responsible. The AP records the deaths; ABC reports that Combs denied involvement in Tupac’s killing and was never named by authorities as a suspect or person of interest in that homicide.
Early 2000s–2006: 50 Cent and Combs shift from overlap to open conflict
The Combs–50 Cent relationship was not hostile from the start. Complex describes shared musical appearances, a 2003 award presentation by Combs to 50 Cent, and activity around a 2004 Bad Boy anniversary release. The same retrospective reports that 50 Cent later said Combs had ghostwritten for him; that is 50 Cent’s account, not an independently established fact. Complex’s timeline traces the changing relationship.

The Mase talks and “The Bomb”
In 2005–2006, discussion of a possible move by Mase from Bad Boy to 50 Cent’s G-Unit did not result in a transfer. The dispute sharpened in 2006, when 50 Cent released “The Bomb,” also referred to as “Hip-Hop,” implying that Combs had a role in Biggie’s killing. That was an accusation in a diss track, not a finding. The Independent’s retrospective covers the diss and the later public thaw.
2007: A public thaw
Combs appeared on a remix of 50 Cent’s “I Get Money,” and the two shared a Screamfest stage with Jay-Z and Kanye West, according to The Independent. Their appearance complicates any account that presents the feud as continuous or unchanging.

2014–2015: Renewed jabs and a vodka-brand rivalry
Complex recounts 50 Cent criticizing Combs’s “Big Homie” and reviving criticism of the Mase deal. In 2015, the rivalry also played out through brand promotion: Combs was associated with Cîroc, while 50 Cent promoted Effen vodka, as The Independent describes. The exchange was part of their public back-and-forth, not evidence that every later disagreement was a sustained personal confrontation.
Later years: Public commentary continues, but the tone varies
Complex’s timeline, which runs through June 2024, documents further jabs and reports that 50 Cent was involved in a Combs docuseries sold to Netflix. It also notes occasions when 50 Cent defended or contextualized Combs amid disputes with others. Social posts, jokes and allegations in this period should be understood as attributed public statements, not verified accounts of private conduct. That timeline does not establish every development through the present.

How the two rivalries differ
| Aspect | Bad Boy–Death Row | Combs–50 Cent |
|---|---|---|
| Who was involved | Combs and Bad Boy, associated with Biggie; Knight and Death Row, associated with Tupac. | Combs and 50 Cent, with the Mase contract discussion becoming one point of friction. |
| Scope | A label rivalry bound up with the broader East Coast–West Coast rap conflict. | A personal and public dispute that surfaced through music, interviews, brand promotion and social commentary. |
| Public flashpoints | Knight’s 1995 Source Awards remark and Tupac’s 1996 “Hit ’Em Up.” | The 2006 diss track, the 2007 collaboration and later exchanges, including the 2015 vodka promotion. |
| Later relationship | The deaths of Tupac and Biggie marked the era, but do not establish who caused either killing. | The relationship included collaboration and periods of reduced tension alongside later flare-ups. |
Retired NYPD detective Derrick Parker, whom ABC identifies as the first officer assigned to investigate crime in the hip-hop world, described the role of music in the conflict: “The beef between them started to go on wax, on records, on tapes, on music.” ABC News attributes the remark to Parker.
These are two major documented arcs, not an authoritative ranking or an exhaustive list of every dispute associated with Combs. The distinction matters especially when accusations about either killing are repeated: a lyric, insult or public claim records what someone alleged, not proof of responsibility.
