Abhay K.’s book argues that Nalanda Mahavihara helped sustain mathematical and astronomical learning and connect it with scholarship elsewhere in Asia. The distinction matters: UNESCO documents Nalanda’s long institutional life and broad influence, while the book’s specific claims about Aryabhata and the transmission of particular ideas require more evidence than the UNESCO records provide.
What Nalanda was—and what UNESCO establishes
Nalanda was a Buddhist monastic and scholastic institution in present-day Bihar, not a university in precisely the modern sense. UNESCO describes archaeological remains spanning roughly the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE and characterizes the site as a place of organized knowledge transmission over 800 years. That is UNESCO’s duration description, not a claim that every activity continued without interruption in the modern institutional sense. UNESCO World Heritage Centre site profile
UNESCO also recognizes Nalanda as a centre of higher learning whose systems of pedagogy, administration, planning, and architecture influenced later institutions. This establishes its wider educational and regional significance; it does not, by itself, verify the book excerpt’s claims about individual mathematicians or particular scientific discoveries. What the book argues about mathematics and astronomy
The Scroll.in excerpt presents Nalanda as part of the history of Indian mathematical astronomy and its movement across Asia. Its argument is that the institution contributed to the study and circulation of knowledge, rather than that Nalanda alone originated the mathematical and astronomical ideas associated with ancient India. The excerpt is from Abhay K.’s Nalanda: How it Changed the World, published by Penguin India. Scroll.in excerpt, 23 January 2025

In particular, the excerpt says Aryabhata was thought to have lived in Pataliputra and to have studied and taught at Nalanda. That affiliation should be read as the book’s claim: the UNESCO materials cited here do not confirm it. The excerpt also describes links between Indian mathematical astronomy and learning in China and the Arabic-speaking world. UNESCO’s account supports Nalanda’s broad pan-Asian importance, but does not establish the specific transmission sequence or named intermediaries described in the excerpt.
How to read the historical claims
- Institutional context: UNESCO supports Nalanda’s long duration as a centre of organized learning and its influence beyond the site.
- The book’s interpretation: Abhay K.’s excerpt connects Nalanda with mathematical and astronomical study and the circulation of knowledge.
- Specific affiliations and routes: Aryabhata’s alleged connection to Nalanda and the named paths by which ideas travelled should not be treated as independently established by UNESCO’s heritage descriptions.
This separation avoids making Nalanda stand in for the whole history of Indian mathematics and astronomy. The excerpt advances a case for the institution’s contribution; the UNESCO records establish the institutional setting, not every scientific detail within that case.
