There is a giant playable Game Boy project, but it is not the official LEGO Game Boy set. Maker LCLDIY’s DIY console uses a resin-printed enclosure and retro-computing hardware; LEGO’s separate set 72046 is a 421-piece build-and-display replica that does not play games.
Is the LEGO Game Boy playable?
No. LEGO set 72046 recreates the original Nintendo Game Boy as a near 1:1-scale brick-built display model. It includes familiar controls, interchangeable brick-built Game Paks and screen options, but not working gameplay. In its July 23, 2025 announcement, The LEGO Group said: “There are no light, sound or display play functions.” Read LEGO’s announcement.
The set contains 421 pieces and is intended for ages 18 and up. LEGO lists its dimensions as over 14 cm high, 9 cm wide and 3 cm deep. Its US price is listed at $59.99 on the announcement and current US product page; price and availability can change. See LEGO’s US product page.
How does the giant playable Game Boy work?
Hackster.io’s report credits the project to maker LCLDIY. Rather than building the giant outer shell from LEGO bricks, the maker used a light-curing resin printer for the case, then finished it with spray paint, arcade-style buttons and transfer stickers. The reported electronics combine a vintage electroluminescent display with a vintage Intel 845 motherboard running Game Boy emulation software.

The report also describes a custom graphics card built around the 65540 Flat Panel VGA Controller chip. The emulation software supplies the Game Boy gameplay; the display and custom graphics hardware are part of how the project presents it on the large screen. Can you build a playable LEGO Game Boy?
You can build the official LEGO replica, but it is not playable. Reproducing LCLDIY’s playable project is a different undertaking: it involves a printed enclosure, vintage computer hardware, emulation, a display and custom graphics hardware, rather than assembling the official LEGO set.

Hackster reports that LCLDIY made design files and the graphics-card BIOS freely available. That does not establish that a complete, currently accessible parts list and step-by-step instructions are available, or that the entire build can be reproduced from those files alone. The report also gives no verified total build cost. Treat the files as potentially useful project resources, not proof of a turnkey kit.
