Estas nueve tradiciones muestran que la Navidad no se celebra de una sola manera: algunas pertenecen a Cataluña y Mallorca, otras forman parte de las fiestas en España, y varias proceden del folclore o la gastronomía islandesa. No existe una lista oficial de nueve costumbres “extrañas”; esta selección reúne ejemplos documentados y señala dónde se practican.
Tradiciones navideñas de Cataluña y Mallorca
1. El Tió de Nadal reparte regalos después de los cantos
En Cataluña, el tió es un tronco presente en un ritual doméstico o comunitario. Se le cantan canciones especiales y se le golpea con un palo; después aparecen regalos, cuya forma tradicional ha cambiado con el tiempo. No es simplemente una máquina de regalos: la Generalitat de Catalunya lo explica como una costumbre popular vinculada a antiguas prácticas invernales europeas con troncos y a simbolismos estacionales. La forma original era un tronco sin cara; los ojos, la nariz y la boca de la versión humanizada se incorporaron después. Esas conexiones históricas no demuestran un único origen pagano.

2. El caganer se esconde en el belén
El belén catalán puede incluir el caganer, una figura tradicional que aparece agachada haciendo sus necesidades. La Generalitat sitúa sus orígenes en el siglo XVIII. Es una figura propia de esta tradición belenística; no hace falta atribuirle un significado simbólico único para entender por qué sorprende a quien no la conoce.

3. La Fia-Faia lleva antorchas encendidas a los pueblos
En Bagà y Sant Julià de Cerdanyola, la Fia-Faia se celebra la víspera de Navidad. Se enciende una hoguera en la montaña y se lleva el fuego hasta los pueblos para prender las faies, antorchas que acompañan la celebración. Hay cantos y, al final, una hoguera comunitaria. La Generalitat vincula la fiesta con el solsticio de invierno y antiguas prácticas agrícolas.

4. El Canto de la Sibila anuncia el Juicio Final en Nochebuena
En las celebraciones mallorquinas de Nochebuena, una persona interpreta en catalán un texto profético sobre el Juicio Final, vestida con túnica y portando una espada. La tradición también se interpreta en otros lugares, así que está asociada a Mallorca, pero no es exclusivamente mallorquina.

5. Els Pastorets mezclan relato religioso y sátira
Els Pastorets son representaciones teatrales populares de Navidad, a menudo interpretadas por grupos aficionados. Sus antecedentes se remontan a celebraciones medievales y la tradición continuó durante el siglo XVI. Junto al relato religioso, pueden incluir sátira y referencias a la vida social y política.

Folclore y comida de Navidad en Islandia
6. Los 13 Yule Lads visitan a los niños
En el folclore islandés, los Yule Lads son trece personajes traviesos que llegan durante los días previos a Navidad. Según la costumbre descrita por Visit Iceland, los niños dejan un zapato en la ventana entre el 11 y el 24 de diciembre con la esperanza de encontrar un pequeño regalo. Es una tradición folclórica, no una descripción de lo que hace cada familia islandesa.

7. El Yule Cat forma parte de una leyenda de advertencia
La misma tradición folclórica incluye a Grýla y al Yule Cat. La leyenda cuenta que el gato amenaza a quienes no recibieron ropa nueva antes de Navidad. Se trata de un relato popular, no de una amenaza literal ni de una creencia atribuible a toda la población.

8. La kæst skata se sirve el 23 de diciembre
La kæst skata es raya fermentada que algunas personas comen en la festividad de San Thorlak, el 23 de diciembre. Visit Iceland destaca su olor y sabor intensos, y señala que es más popular entre las generaciones mayores. No es una comida que deba presentarse como universal entre los islandeses.

Costumbres extendidas en España
9. Las doce uvas marcan las campanadas de Nochevieja
En España, una costumbre de Nochevieja es comer doce uvas, una al ritmo de cada campanada de medianoche, para recibir el año nuevo. Aunque aparece en una selección de tradiciones navideñas, su momento es el cambio de año, no la cena de Navidad.

Por qué estas costumbres no son intercambiables
- Las celebraciones catalanas y mallorquinas son tradiciones regionales, no prácticas uniformes de toda España.
- El tió es un ritual con canciones y un tronco; el caganer es una figura del belén.
- La Fia-Faia tiene como eje el fuego y las antorchas; el Canto de la Sibila es una interpretación musical.
- En Islandia, los Yule Lads y el Yule Cat pertenecen al folclore, mientras que la kæst skata es una costumbre gastronómica.
- Las uvas corresponden a Nochevieja y los Reyes Magos al 6 de enero: ambas encajan en la temporada festiva, pero no ocurren en Navidad misma.
